Man to Be Hanged for Bringing Bundles of Pot Into Singapore

I crossed the border into Mexico once while on a motorcycle trip. Nothing bad happened, but I never felt so uncomfortable in my life . Never went back.

Perhaps it was just me , my mind working against me ??
More likely it was your mind recalling that Mexico suffers with rampant corruption on every level from street cop to the highest elected officials, and arrestees are generally presumed guilty and have to prove their innocence rather than the other way around.

I know plenty of people who were hassled by Tijuana police for no reason whatsoever beyond a shakedown for some money. When I used to go there I stuck to busy tourist areas and left before dark. Probably won't go back again, sad to say. Mexican border towns can be very dangerous for those who don't know their way around, and even then...
True-true.

Exactly. "That's the law" and there are signs everywhere reminding you. This fellow is apparently a resident of either Singapore or Maylasia and there is no way in hell he didn't know the consequences of getting caught with drugs. Anyway, he claims that he was "high" at the time as if that might award him some sort of sympathy or leniency. Good luck with that defence!
Claiming you were high or saying you didn't know the law is absolutely no excuse. It is the visitor/tourist job to know what the law on drugs is when you enter a country. Lonely Planet is pretty bad on telling young people where to "party" and where to have a wild time. For example, Canadian or US laws aren't worth a nickel down in Mexico, Saudi Arabia or Singapore. You are in a foreign country and you really should be a nice respectable tourist. If you want to "go wild, smoke pot, do drugs or promote your alternate lifestyle" it's best you stay home where you can always cry about your "human rights" and lawyers and judges will know what it is that you are talking about!

We used to stay down at Port Isabel, Texas and often went across the border to Matamoris and to Progress. Many of the people bought new glasses, prescription drugs or had dental work done. I never heard of anyone being hassled by the police. However, if you look like some sort of freak, try to buy drugs, party at the local bars at night and chase the young senoritias; you are asking for BIG TROUBLE, HOMBRE!

I agree with you but there are many countries in "the west" where the laws are obscure. For example, which states in the US allow cannabis "for personal use"? Do you know? Do visitors know? In the case of Singapore, EVERYONE KNOWS! It is posted everywhere at borders and within the country. I travelled overland to Singapore and leaving Malaysia I saw plenty of warnings. I then flew out of Singapore heading to Jakarta and the same was true at the airport: lots of notices. Although I didn't fly into Singapore I am sure that airline passengers are given a form to fill in upon which WARNINGS about the laws of Singapore are clear and demonstrative.

I minded my p's and q's when visiting Mexico in the 70s - 90s, which I did many times. However, TJ has become more corrupt and dangerous over the years. Even for visitors who are behaving themselves.

I was in Mexico several times during the 1960s and the only danger back then was Montezuma's Revenge. I had long hair though and it was a certainty my car would be searched every time but I wasn't so stupid to have tried taking drugs across the border so I just sat back, relaxed and let them search my car as much as they wanted.

I once did something so stupid I must have had one or more of @Gaer's angels surrounding me. I was 20, travelling by train through East Germany on my way to West Berlin.
What's stupid about that? I was a resident of West Berlin during the Cold War and I hitch-hiked through the DDR so many times that my passport was filled to the max. I never had a single problem, ever.

I also have been to Singapore. In fact, the day before I arrived on my first trip there, the cab driver that picked us up at the airport told us that just the day before two Australians were hung for bringing illegal drugs into their country. The hanging was at the prison in Changi, which is near the airport.

Remember the movie “Midnight Express?”

Were you carrying 200 tabs of LSD & 100 tabs of mescalin? ......
Who? Me? Naw, I would have smoked it, snorted it, or dropped it all just before the border checkpoint. 😄

Disclaimer: I smoked two reefers in Vietnam and a few in the States but I never even tried anything else.

Chicken, me? I visited a friend and his wife once who both shot up in the kitchen as I was standing there and I knew another guy who I saw standing on the curb one day in front of UNM as though he wanted to cross but couldn't get his nerves working in unison. Chicken? No, it's just that I could see where that road was heading and I didn't want to be on it.
