Valentine's Day.........Love It Or Hate It???

From reading the comments, it sounds like whether you like Valentine's Day or not depends on your marital status. I'm divorced, and I hate the day because it reminds me of what I don't have. The same seems to be true for those who are widowed. It's too bad that advertisers don't think about the many people who are single, either their own choice, or someone else's, or by death.

Years ago, it wasn't such a big broo-haa as it is now, and I never thought much of it, even when I was in a relationship. It seems to have become a much bigger marketing ploy these days, and I think puts a lot of pressure on everyone...even couples. Going out to dinner on valentine's day is like on mother's day - it's packed like sardines, if you can even get a table. Another excuse to buy gifts and chocolate, even for ourselves -- not that there's anything wrong with that. :)

When it comes to adults, Valentine's Day isn't for singles who don't have anyone, I mean really, it isn't. The day is still for small kids giving those cute little Valentine's Day cards (handmade or bought) to classmates, but today the adult couples sure are into it as well. Gottta admit, it's great for businesses that cater to holidays and/or events like this. Hallmark sure makes a mint!

I think what us "older" folks have to remember is that the people of today make a much higher salary than when we were younger. And, it doesn't bother them at all to spend that money on themselves and/or their partner. Just like Fathers Day, Mothers Day, New Year's Eve and the others.......lots of money spent and it don't bother the ones spending it.

I'm single, but, I don't hate the day, sometimes I even get together with other singles and go out on the town for the evening dancing or for dinner just for the fun of it. Not really that big of a deal really. In past years when I had a close nit group of friends living in the same city, we would give each other cards and funny gifts as well, some of the friends were in relations some were not. Still, it's all about the chocolate these days, over all it's just another card opportunity nothing to get all stressed out over.

PS, the day is for whomever chooses to make use of it in anyway they so choose to.

A very, very dear friend of mine died suddenly on Valentine's Day 3 years ago. So the day always brings back painful memories. I think it's harder when someone dies on a holiday because it always brings it up so clearly. My mother died on Mothers' Day, for cryin' out loud. So every Mothers' Day, boom, I'm right back there.

While going to college... a few hundred years ago... I worked for a floral company. So, my fiancee rec'd roses on Valentine's Day. Now, almost 50 years later, she still thinks she deserves roses! (And she does.)

Then, in 1976, our middle girl was born on February 14th. She'll turn 39 this year. Growing up, she always thought she was "special" for having a birthday on Valentine's Day. And... she is!!

My wife gets a little "teary-eyed" each year when the days come up that her mom and son died, but with my help, and lighting some candles for Remembrance, she survives those days very good.

Sort of "meh" these days. Last year, my boyfriend and I bought the exact same card for each other. We had a good laugh about that. Even bought it at different stores. I remember when I was in elementary school, how exciting Valentine's Day was.....making our decorated card boxes, picking out the right package of cards and the competition to see who got the most cards (the little blue-eyed blonde girls seemed to have that competition locked up........I was definitely out of medal range....).

Funny and shocking (to us), but, wife and I bought each other the exact same Christmas card a couple of years ago. When we each opened our Christmas card, we went "WHAT?" and then LOL.

Never have cared much about Valentine's Day.... Growing up .in the UK it was only sweethearts that bothered with it but here in the US it seems you have to send cards to sons, daughters.....Uncle Tom Cobbley and all. It's just a money making racket.
