WOW, what a night. We had high winds all day yesterday. Late yesterday afternoon our power went out. Just came back on about 20 minutes ago. Just in time to go to bed.
I just have one small flashlight...time to buy a battery powered little lantern or something. But, I had a few nice scented candles..so my house smells nice now

At least you're ok...and you've had an adventure!

So sorry to hear about all the issues, Marie. We've been through it in Dallas as well over the years, so I empathize. My advice is to go out and buy more flashlights. We swear by the lanterns.

So glad to hear your power is back on and that you can get a decent night's sleep tonight. Take care!

How was it for heat, cooking and keeping food frozen?

Our garage door is very heavy and couldn’t be opened unless DH got on a ladder and propped it up. We had the opener replaced. Fortunately we didn’t have such an extended emergency that we had to get the car out.

Here ya go!

It was very windy here, but the power in my complex didn't go out.
It probably wouldn't hurt if I upgraded my emergency lighting system too.

Well, I had already had my dinner, so no need to cook. Though I did make myself a peanut butter sandwich, I kept my fridge and freezer doors closed, did not open. I am in an apartment building. Well enough insulated that it was not that bad. Plus, not freezing out, in the 50s

Power outages, in today's world are extremely "inconvenient", at the very least. With nearly everything dependent upon electricity, losing power for more than a couple of hours can be a real hassle. It's wise to keep several flashlights, and spare batteries scattered throughout the house, but candles can be a fire hazard.

@Don M. good advice. I did order a second flashlight, a beacon type, from Amazon.
You are right about the candles. I did light just one..and had it on the table next to me Blew it out before I left the room.
I had a housemate once who lit several candles in the house...then left. I was not at home at the time.
It was MY house, so I was pissed. She could not understand why I was angry

When we moved to the countryside, I bought a 6500 watt generator. Luckily, in almost 20 years, I've only needed to use it a couple of times. The worst outage was about 18 hours when a big tree toppled onto the power lines.

Like most other things, if I'm prepared for the worst, it usually doesn't happen....without this generator, we would probably lose power frequently, the way my luck runs. As it is, 99% of the use this generator has received is my starting it up and running it for a few minutes every few weeks.

It doesn't take cold weather to take the power out. Several years ago, when we would have strong winds in Dallas our power would go out. We live in a forested area. Our power provider eventually came out and trimmed the trees so the limbs would no longer fall on the power lines. We haven't had this situation for a couple of years. Fingers crossed.

Californians here would know more than I. I‘ve heard that the power company turns off parts of the grid when weather conditions are dangerous and they did this for many hours in parts of LA on Christmas Day.
