Many people go out of their way to avoid arguments and I do admire them generally, but sometimes those of us more inclined to take up cudgels and engage in an argument do wish their feathers might get ruffled a bit, (if you follow my drift?).

A cousin of mine used to say she did all in her power to rile her husband when they were first married and he wouldn't fall for it, (a sign of a strong character no doubt, and they're happily married fifty years on!).

Not if it's with a bloke, I always stand my ground, but, with a woman, I just throw the towel in, I've never won an argument with a member of the female sex, because they are so much better at arguing than I am, and just when they've won the tongue lashing, they always come back with, "And another thing!!!"

As I got older I learned to avoid confrontation. It makes life easier.

I prefer to discuss an issue civilly but if the other person wants an argument, I'm up for it....unless it's about something stupid or petty.

Are you familiar with the saying "Pick your battles"?

I doubt I would be married for 59 years & 9 months if I took a cudgel to my wife. Early on looking for the cause of what we disagreed on & finding a middle ground took patience on both our parts. Now that most if not all our differences are solved life is as good as it gets. As for others & their opinions expressing an opposing view might just teach me something I didn't know.

I try to avoid arguments most of the time. At times my feathers have gotten ruffled. We are all human and many of us get irked. I do sometimes but don't want to get into a battle of wits or whatever.

I avoid all arguments now that I am old. It's not worth the aggravation. I grew up in a house where my parents were always arguing. I've taken part in quite a few arguments in my life, but I've fully retired from that.

To stand up for myself or others or if someone is trying to take advantage i will not stand down to bullies.


A good debate civilly done is preferred .......but if other parties wants an argument i will stand my ground.

Good girl, my feeling exactly, (though those with a tendency to bully others don't ease off for long do they unfortunately!).

There's a Month Python sketch where a guy goes to an office in order to have an argument, or to pay someone to argue with him, (the guy going to the office was a fresh faced Michael Palin, whilst the paid arguer was played by John Cleese - with me so far, I believe the show and the two funny guys are/were well known in the US?).

Not sure whether we'd find anything to argue about, as you're my forum hero as you know, but just in case I will be warned now!

Believe it or not, I'm getting too old to care about arguing most things, except I still cannot tolerate racism, sexism, anti-semitism, etc. in any form and might regret it, but still feel the need to defend if I feel it is necessary to call attention to. Some things are not open topics for discussion, imo. If one's starting premise is based on prejudice I'm all over you. 'You' being generic, of course.

I appreciate a reasoned debate with someone who doesn't agree with me. I can learn from it, even if I don't change my mind.

However I do not enjoy and avoid emotion based arguments. Nothing good comes of these.

Sometimes it can be hard to know which a person is interested in, at first anyway.

I think most of us would rather just let an annoyance pass, but it depends on what the provocation was. If you're getting all bent out of shape, because there's more cheese on one side of your cheeseburger: then you've got problems.

It all depended on what and who. If it was someone close, I would avoid and try reasoning but, anyone else, I would stand my ground.

These days I take the view that most things aren't worth fighting over and rely on the death stare instead.
