I think you might want to try mushrooms first. I used to do acid once or twice a year, I find mushrooms to be more enjoyable at my age, and consider it along the lines of an enema for the brain. A fresh outlook from a better perspective. Seems to work for me, YMMV. If you go ahead with the LSD make sure you are in a safe place with someone you like and trust. One thing I can tell you, you will never see things quite the same way again, and this is a good thing. Mike
 
If you are serious about considering LSD, I'd recommend you choose a handler to stay with you throughout. This needs to be someone who'll remain completely sober during your trip, is experienced with LSD, will mostly stay out of your way while keeping you physically safe, will call the EMTs if that turns out to be necessary, and knows when and how to distract you from a bummer train of thought should your brain slide that way.

Not recommending it nor attempting to dissuade you. I took some hallucinogenics (including acid) during my wanton youth. No regrets but also no particular desire to revisit the experience.
 
In the meantime you might be interested in reading a book or two by John C. Lilly. Here is one that I read and thought was spot on.

" The Center of the Cyclone
The book explores the question of consciousness and the inner world of the mind, refracted through the experience of Lilly himself in the 1960s using the drug LSD and, particularly, flotation tanks and isolation. It also examines Lilly's notion of self-metaprogramming as a means to shape and direct certain experiences and gain autonomy and mastery over the direction that they take.[1]

The book also recounted Lilly's interactions with other explorers of consciousness such as Oscar Ichazo in Chile whose work was based in part on that of Gurdijeff. Lilly adapted Ichazo's concepts of a range of different levels of experience, using pre-existing concepts such as satori or samadhi, to create a composite framework of consciousness ranging on the one hand from the death of the ego and fusion with the Universal Mind to a state of the 'quintessence of evil' and 'deepest hell imaginable' on the other hand.[2]

One of the key insights put forward by Lilly is the view that "in the province of the mind, what is believed to be true is true or becomes true, within certain limits to be found experientially and experimentally. These limits are further beliefs to be transcended. In the province of the mind, there are no limits."[3] In this context, Lilly draws a distinction between the limitless province of the mind and the realm of the body, in which there are limits that cannot be transcended."

How about exploring your mind's capabilities in other ways? Meditation; studying something difficult and new; exploring something spiritual like Zen Buddhism. I took psychedelics a few times as a youth but it always seemed an "unearned" way to enlightenment.

I recommend the prose and poetry of Gary Snyder for those seeking enlightenment.

Tripping on a regular dose lasted over 10 hours or thereabouts. I doubt you'll be just sitting in one spot for that amount of time unless you're picking yourself apart which isn't good. LSD is physically challenging as well, if you take yourself out & I bet you do. It's exhausting for an old person. I don't think you can handle it. It was WORK. A day's work. And alone? You're begging for trouble.
