Teen mum throws baby in dumpster

But still interesting that two officials in one NM town would like to make it more anonymous.
I believe they may be referring to the drop off shacks/shelters. Like a little clubhouse deal at fire stations, police stations etc., where a baby can be dropped off, no one there to ask questions, and when that happens it said a sensor is triggered so they are alerted a baby is in there.

I just cried when I saw this on the news, which happened Friday in New Mexico. Is it not bad enough that people throw animals away like garbage but to do that to a live baby. I wonder what that young mum was thinking, what drove her to make that decision? Maybe there are no safe places to drop a baby no questions asked in NM. After she drove away others were seen driving up to the dumpster and going through the garbage. Thankfully they found the baby, police and ambulance arrived. Maybe those people were her family, I guess we'll know in time.
This happens quite often. Babies can be taken and left at fire stations anywhere in the county with no charges filled against the parents

New Mexico's Safe Haven for Infants Act. The baby must be less than 90 days old.

New Mexico Statutes 24-22-1.1. Purpose

The purpose of the Safe Haven for Infants Act is to promote the safety of infants and to immunize a parent from criminal prosecution for leaving an infant, ninety days of age or less, at a safe haven site. This act is not intended to abridge the rights or obligations created by the federal Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978 or the rights of parents.
They changed the laws from when they were first written, because parents started dropping off teenagers. 😂. Kind of funny, but true

Thank goodness from a criminal perspective she was STUPID enough to think she would get away with it by throwing it in the trash with video cameras everywhere instead of being clever about it. Also the bag had to have been unsealed for air to get in or the baby would have suffocated, another thank goodness she was stupid!

A tiny little baby,100% innocent. She is despicable beyond human comprehension!
No she is not despicable. A LOT of woman understand her blight, it is quite comprehensive to me.

She is a young frightened female human being with no one to trust and no place to go and no choices or answers that she could see. The baby daddy is just as responsible but absent. It took two to make the baby and two too abandon it. What do you say about the worthless male?

I will go with JC’s judgement: “Those without sin, cast the first stone” or something to that effect.

Well let's say instead the ACT was despicable, that better? About the worthless male, she said she did not even know she was pregnant until the day she gave birth, so how would the worthless male even know she was?

The actual clause is biblical, as in the bible, a quote from Jesus, in case you never heard it.

I think JC was Jesus, but what do I know 😂. And yes I have read the Bible and even remember some of it. Although, only my favorite parts 😊

I don’t think the act was despicable, I think it was sad, born out of desperation. Years ago a baby with DS was put out in a garage can and discovered when a neighbor took her can out and heard a faint noise. She thought a kitten had been thrown away, and investigated.

The parents of the baby were married, and arrested. The judge let them go because “they had suffered enough“ by giving birth to a baby with Downs Syndrome. 🤬

Many woman, who are not teenagers, do not know they are pregnant. It is a psychological issue. Years ago they even had a TV show on this issue. This issue is still addressed sometimes on TV medical drama shows.

It is common, in almost all societies even in this day and age, for newborn babies to be thrown away or left in places. It happens a lot in China still.

My daughter’s friend has adopted two boys from China, pre Covid. One was left in a department store changing room. I think the other was left on the street, in a gutter. At that time when you adopted; they took you and showed you where the baby was discovered.

The boys were left because they had complicated intestinal medical issues. My daughter’s friend was born with the same issues so she was well able to raise the boys and deal with their life long issues.

In any event, I have no ideal how young the girl is, but if she is under sixteen when the baby was conceived, the male should be arrested. Once his legal issues are resolved-child support for 18 years. My great granddaughter’s so-called father, was 19, had three different babies by three different teenage mothers and supported none of them. As you can imagine, my opinion of worthless males is from first hand knowledge.

Aneeda you said:

On top of the father not even knowing she was even pregnant, if does NOT take two to abandon it, it took only one, HER.

Out of curiosity i looked it up she was 18.
she claims she did not know until a day before birth which i guess was at her home by evidence found.
So the father would not have known either.

"She identified who she believed the father was and said she ended the relationship with him in August 2021, according to police. Authorities were working to contact him."
One story listed him as still Under 18.

It was only her charged She was charged with attempted murder and felony child abuse

"She told investigators that she "panicked, did not know what to do or who to call," when she gave birth, Fons said.

Avila then cut the umbilical cord, wrapped the baby in a towel, put the child in a white plastic bag with trash, placed it inside a larger black trash bag and drove around until she decided to toss the bag in a green dumpster, according to the chief."

Well, of course, an 18 year old should have a job, an apartment, health insurance, and the knowledge necessary to care for a newborn without any support at all. She probably had the baby at home, without medical help, because she recognized how easy it would be.

In any event, we agree to disagree.

She will get the mental health care she needs. I doubt she will get jail time. She might get the baby back, if she wants. The biological father will get to pay child support. It is a complicated social issue and won’t be solved by judge mental people who do not know the girls background or situation.

The baby will not necessarily be placed up for adoption. But all adoptions are “open” now, so he will know his bio mother if she wishes it so. Having been a foster parent for over 35 years, I saw a lot. It never turns out well.

I just posted what was in article about case... you seem to assume my position

NO ONE would assume she has job/ apartment health insurance etc.....
but one would assume she had the ability to research her options.

I believe we have more information available to us at our fingertips ........ through computers for any questions someone would have.
an google search for information .....she could know about safe haven drop offs etc.

As a young woman i would be more frightened something would go wrong in the birthing process ........... how would she recognize in your words " how easy it would be". She is lucky it did go well. Considering no prenatal care
Perhaps she googled how to have a home birth / cutting cord and other items regarding childbirth.

NOT all adoptions are open ..... for the simple fact that many birth parents should not know where the child is.

Child support is a court issue.
I remember when it was said sex ed would fix this ... if girls and boys understood etc but NOPE same thing over and over regardless that in public school she would have had years of sex ed classes .... boys too.

Boys should protect themselves from either way they have no say ...

Over the past few decades, this has happened more often than one can believe. The first case I heard of was when a girl had her baby at a school dance and left it in the toilet !! The cold hearted, callousness of these acts are mind blowing. I know these teens must be scared and maybe confused but good grief ! Then one has to wonder, were there no support systems available? Ultimately, though, let the punishment fit the crime.
The young and inexperienced may believe the baby was born dead......lets face it babies usually look dead and usually need to be helped to take their first breath, then they cry. The young pregnant girls also may fear their parents finding out, or they might be just plain dumb and not realize they are pregnant. Which is not to excuse an 18 year old! I wouldn't feel like a 17 or 16 year old would be that innocent either! Then we don't throw away our dead anyway!

Jeni, you are giving her, and millions of others, too much credit here. She's a kid, and not necessarily a bright one. Many people are not as adept at these things as you are and maybe assuming others are as well. Not always. Besides, she panicked and who could blame her if it's true she did not know. And if she did not know baby daddy did not know.

Pepper, you may be right but .....most young are adept at computers growing up with them and taught in schools unlike people my age and up. pleading ignorance when they face real life situations has been known to get a slap on the wrist.

I cannot imagine what you must have gone through win231 to experience that. Experiencing such an incident I think would have affected my whole life. How does one forget that?
No one can actually forget that, but knowing there is no limit to evil in humans puts it in perspective.

I didn't realize dumpster divers opened bags of trash, I thought they picked up disposed furniture and knick-knacks. That must have been super exciting to find a baby, it is nice they called the police instead of keeping it.
Maybe something went wrong with the teenage mom's hormones too? I remember once seeing a young dog in a kennel that had recently given birth to a large litter of puppies. The dog didn't care about them at all and they had been scattered all over the kennel by her running around in it. It was very sad.
Also the news this past week mentioned some zoo where a 23 yr old gorilla had had a baby but wasn't taking care of it, but an older female gorilla in the group took over caring for the neglected baby.
So, I guess this is a not-rare occurrence for mammals in general maybe.
