A phenomenon I've noticed on many forums---over time the membership drifts so that only folks with one fairly narrow viewpoint remain active. These members then become moderators. Any time a newcomer tries to disagree, or state a different point of view, the members gang up on the newbie and shout him down with a long series of posts. The newbies tuck tail and run promptly. This is really bad, imo, and why internet forums are not always a very good way to discuss and learn things.
I would say a lot more on this because it is one of my pet peeves, but would probably get a time-out.
It would make a good masters thesis topic in sociology or psychology.
