I agree with your first statement there, but from my experiences what's worse is when individuals for no apparent reason target somebody and go 'behind the scenes' to get the person banned. And the person- in this case me- hadn't done anything wrong and never knew what went on.The worst forums are the ones that allow personal attacks. Some people like that kind of thing. We've seen people join SFs who want to be able to insult others and they don't last long because the admins don't allow it here. Those kinds of people are incapable of engaging in honest dialogue or debate or discussion so they resort to insults. That's all they know how to do. It's pathetic.
The first forum allowed members to email others through the forum. A tech-savvy friend said the only logical explanation was a member edited my emails to say something I had not said. Neither of the admins would even check to see what actually happened. And I didn't even know I was 'banned for life' til another member emailed me one morning and asked me what the reason was.
As their motto is "Do only that which is right," boy are they ever hypocrites. I'd been a member of ulc.net/forum for many years, and lost something that was very important to me.
I was also on another forum for many years, but not nearly as active. Private messages were generally people who asked me for info on writing topics such as publishing companies. A new member joined, and started getting personal- adding x's and o's to messages, etc. It was not a 'dating' site, so I tried to politely ignore his comments.
I approached moderators, and they said they'd deal with him. But when I tried to log in, I saw I was 'banned for life.'
Worsening matters, one of the mods followed (stalked) me to Topix, where numerous other people said they'd had similar experiences. I do not want to pass on rumors, but I don't think it's a coincidence that everybody who spoke out about these bannings from city-data forum were minorities.
