I recently discovered this and while not active much here in Canada I wonder if it is the same in the USA. A great way to find recommendations for services in your community.

So far I have recommended a handyman and he got a job from someone due to the recommendation.

Yes I have been using it for about 6 months now for our area, it keeps me updated as to what's going on...I rarely post on there, but it's handy to get to know local handymen etc.. The other side of the coin is that someone in our Next door App has started a forum where people can name and shame bad or unqualified trades people who advertise on Next door, so that's handy to know too..

I'm a member, but I turned off the notifications. It turned into a place for neighborhood rants and gossip.

I've used it to give some things away with good results.

I still check it from time to time for information on things like water main breaks, power outages, local crimes, etc...

Everything seems to work by 'word of mouth' here. You can get just about anything if you know who to ask. The problem is that in an established community, everybody knows everyone else. When you're an incomer, it takes a while to learn who people are.

When I first moved here, I was given this advice - "always use a local tradesperson because if they do a bad job in the morning, everyone will know by the afternoon". When I wanted new windows in my house I went to a small local company. I asked if they would need a deposit before starting. I was told "No. When we've finished and you're happy with the work, then you pay us".

I looked at joining but I feel they ask nosy questions & want verifications I wouldn't give to prove I am who I say I am & live where I live. I see a need for that, but what documents they are asking for is too personal; don't want to get too chummy.

didn't ask for anything more than my name and road name... I didn't even sign up with my own name.. !! Always better to be one step ahead of the neighbours lol, so if I post on there with a view that may be unpopular ( ot that I have )..or if I want to look for tradesman, no-one actually knows who I am ( unless I tell them by PM) ..unlike everyone else who've signed up with their real names...

Here they are asking for bills with your name & address; your drivers license with name & address and more, but I closed the site before I saw what else they want---oh, yeah, a rental agreement or, if you own, a tax statement. What? NO. @hollydolly
hahaha..no Holly Dolly, can't be giving out my real name now can I ? :sneaky::ROFLMAO:...you're pulling my leg about them wanting all that stuff, surely ?... why on earth would they need that .. ?

I thought anyone who gives this info is a naive idiot. I may sometimes be an idiot, but Never naive!
yes well you would be if you gave that type of info...is that happening with everyone else in the USA?>. it certainly isn't the case here.. you just have to give your street name and post-code , and that's it..

Very much used here in SFBA communities. Popular and useful. The way it is used has varied much between communities with some dominated by too many whiny and annoying members.

Most useful currently, for warning others about roaming thieves especially home burglars, doorstep package thieves, and vehicle window smash and grab miscreants that drive in from dozens of miles away plaguing our middle class residential zones.

Yes, it happened the other day when I was going to get registered on a realty site; it wanted everything Pepper mentioned plus our latest property tax bill for pat's sake.
