All of the customs we follow- and everybody does it.

I notice stuff nobody cares about. Like curtains. When you think of it, curtains are weird. We build windows to let in light, and immediately cover them up with cloth. And homes have to have curtains. Then there's headboards on beds. Why have them. Are they going to stop you from falling off the head of your bed? We have all these customs we follow. Everybody keeps their jewels in the same place. Why?
We follow these customs without thinking about it. I only thought of three customs.

I have curtains to draw at night to stop people seeing into my home

I have bedheads to prevent my head hitting the brick wall in the middle of the night...

Where do I keep my jewellery ?... bet you couldn't guess!!

That's how I feel about dishwashers. When I was married, we bought a house that came with one. I'd ask my wife, "What's the purpose of it when you're washing the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher?" (just like that Cascade commercial).
My current house also came with a dishwasher. I use it for storage.

the very last thing you should do is wash dishes before you put them in a dishwasher, because dishwasher liquid needs grease or food remnants to adhere to , if it doesn't have that the harsh detergent can cause scratches in the dish-ware, and therefore an entry for bacteria.. the dishes only have to be scraped of food before adding to the dishwasher..

People who don't believe in Jesus decorate for Christmas.
People who aren't Irish and have never been there, decorate for St. Patrick's Day
People who never go to church celebrate Easter.

But all is not lost! There is the myth of fat old man living in the north pole. Also, the myth of a rabbit running around stuffing chocolate eggs all over the house! Tell me, what would we do without our myths?

some people think this is need to belong..... i think it is silly.......
i never understood how many people bought decor etc every holiday ...if you store it nicely you can find for following years but can not tell you how many people i know that FOUND all those decorations when they are moving etc....
went to a thrift store recently and was laughing at all the Easter etc....they have cleaned out of some ones home never used....

I also have no need to buy any holiday stuff .... or follow any made up traditions pushed by media or advertising.....

i wonder with the neighbors who spend a month putting up holiday scenes or decorations .... do they get that much enjoyment of all the work / cost etc or is it all about keeping up appearances.

Dishwashers are great for sanitizing dishes in a multi-person household, especially one with children.

Exactly. It's like you're already half done, why not just go all the way? Unless newer dishwashers work differently so you can just throw dishes in and forget.

It's relative to the times.

In 1850 it was customary for most southern families to own slaves, if nothing more than kitchen/nanny help.
not in this country... most people lived like slaves here rather than BE slaves to anyone.. the vast majority of people worked slave labour jobs.. .To think it's was only 150 years ago, and the huge strides we've made .. and my great grandparents would never imagine what we have today compared to then

That is interesting... A useful fact.

If it were up to me my house would have dishwashers instead of cabinets, 2 or 3 should be sufficient. When I couldn't find a clean dish in one I'd just turn it on. Seems practical.

Why do men wear ties when dressed for business? I've never understood what purpose they serve.
Ties evolved from those frilly white bib-like things worn by men of importance and status back in the 16 and 1700s. Ties still represent importance and power in business, as well as convention...meaning your willingness to conform to the rules and be part of the team.

A dishwasher is just what the name implies. Unlike what one daughter in law thought. She took the advice to rinse & use the garbage disposal unit in the sink. Next visit she proudly showed how clean her dishwasher was, her dinner ware & even more proud that there was no longer a funky stinky smell in her kitchen.

I might mention she didn't like how her hands got when using a detergent to wash her dinnerware that is why she used her dishwasher. Seemed simple to me to just rinse in some water & pop into the dishwasher.

I'm afraid to say that I did not raise my children with religion, I chose to raise them with all the commercial holidays.

When they were little, My husband and I used to make a huge fuss about Easter and Christmas.
At Easter, they had to follow the talcum powder footprints of the Easter Bunny to find the chocolate easter eggs.

On Christmas eve we would leave out the cookies and milk for Santa and a carrot for the Boomers, Then when we were sure they were just about ready to doze off, Terry and I got out our bells and torches with red cellophane of them and rang them as well as slowly raising the torch high into the sky.
We would then make sleigh tracks by running an old bike rim in the ground.

The kids loved it and would always dash outside to see if the Boomers ate the carrot, to find a half-chewed Carrot and a thankyou note from the boomers.

It warms my heart that my daughter has continued these traditions with her children.

People born from 1946 - 1964?
According to my grandson, they look something like this.

Boomers were large, brutish, markedly less intelligent Locust who earned their reputation as the Locust Horde's heavy weapon specialists.
