Still PO'd over the President's EO on immigration, the GOP has attempted to derail it by tying it to the funding of Homeland Security.. RATHER than pass a clean funding bill.... OR (God forbid) craft their own immigration legislation, they have again resorted to the old brinksmanship politics to derail anything our President has done.
The optics of this are horrible, don't you think? At a time when the terror threat is at a fevered pitch around the world... is it wise to defund Homeland Security? Despite the fact that the department is funded primarily by fees, not tax dollar, it give the average person the impression that the GOP places politics ahead of security.. Just pass a clean funding bill for crying out loud and quit playing those stupid games.. It didn't work for you before, what makes you think it will work now? See... having the majority leaves the GOP holding the governance bag... and I might add.. so far they aren't doing very well.
Republicans are six votes short of the 60 needed to advance most legislation, and Senate rules grant numerous rights to the minority party. That means if Democrats remain united, they have the ability to block GOP bills just as they did while in the majority.
Democrats have been united against House-passed legislation funding the Homeland Security Department through September, the end of the budget year, while also rolling back President Barack Obama's executive policies on immigration.
As a result Congress appears to be at a stalemate on the issue, leaving Republicans with only a few options: pass a short-term extension of current funding levels, fold and strip the immigration language opposed by Democrats from the bill, or let the Homeland Security Department run out of money when current funding expires Feb. 27.
