Gas Fill Up, Do You Pay First Or Pump Then Pay

BC requires a pre-pay after a young employee was killed trying to chase down a thief.

I pay at the pump, definitely don’t want to walk in and wait to put some money down.

In the US we usually choose the chain with the significantly lower prices and they don’t take a CC. I have to walk inside and stand in line with all the people buying stuff. Even if they do take a CC it seems the postal code messes us up.
 
@Lee, maybe because it’s an Indian Reserve gas bar, they’re trying to make it difficult for you. I didn’t think they were permitted to sell to non-status folks though I know my daughter sometimes goes to one.
 
Pay at the pump with credit card. No guesswork & have a receipt so that I can check gas mileage.
 
I go inside and pay first. I don't think you can gas up until you pay, unless of course you're using a card.
It doesn't bother me, as I just pick up a lotto ticket/scratcher at the same time.

Well I hope that that’s isn’t a trend that catches on widely. But how handy it might be to have an ATM in the lobby of the gas station that, for a fee of course, one can get the necessary cash to pay for their gas. More profit for the gas stations and less convenience, much less, for the consumer.

That’s true, I’d forgotten about most gas stations not having free air anymore. It also used to be that a nail in a tire was repairable too but these days, it seems that the way tires are made the tire is unrepairable and has to be replaced. I haven’t had a tire that was able to be repaired, I was told that anyway, in probably 20 or more years.

They can sell to Native and non Native but the Native folk pay less showing their status card. Same with the cigarettes.

Natives have been known to lend their card though to give a break to a non Native friend.

Funny thing about the cigarette sales, cops have their hiding places and sometimes will nail a white person with an illegal stash, quite a hefty fine too I believe.

I don't know how it would work if you paid first for $100 and only had a fill of $80....I suppose they would issue a credit.

They put that credit on your card. You're only charged for the gas you pumped.

When buying gas with cash I overpay the clerk to start with, then return to get my change and receipt. The price difference between cash and credit cards now is less than the 2% rewards I get from my credit card, so I use a CC these days.
 
Another pay at the pump. I get a receipt so that if there is card fraud--there's a card reader device that can steal info--I'll have the date and time stamp to trace fraud. Since Covid, it really irks me when the pumps are out of receipt paper and I have to mask up, go in and request one. There are indicator lights at the checkout counter that alert clerks when a pump is out of paper. I know they don't immediately rush out to refill the paper, but the pumps are out much more frequently since before the pandemic.
 
Almost always fill up at a local station where (like in years past) the attendant pumps the gas and cleans your windshield. Costs a few pennies more per gallon but in my late 80's and somewhat crippled up, it's worth the extra. Hardly noticeable at today's gas prices. Always cash.

I commented about the credit card ,because we always put a 20p piece in , but credit card, what a joke

It depends on where I go. My usual gas is Costco so I swipe the cc. Some gas stations do make you pay upfront especially out of town. I have no problem either way.

I think that in the states, it was a hassle for the attendants to make change. It started out as 50 cents, then soon went to a dollar. But asking the attendant to change a $20 bill was too much trouble for the stations. Putting a card reader there solved that.

That’s why I bought a tyre pressure inflated lol….but not tried it out yet !
