Gas Fill Up, Do You Pay First Or Pump Then Pay

We have gas cards for the major stations we use out here. Quick swipe and it's ready to fill up. I always fill up the tank, as my SUV eats premium so a full tank is peace of mind.

It costs whatever it costs. We don't drive far since the pandemic (no more car trips for now, alas) but once or twice a week we bunch our errands together and take the opportunity to dine out.

We fill up at the local native reserve, DH goes in the little store while they fill our tank for us. He then pays and off we go. Usually it is service with a smile.

Use credit card at pump. Pumps here won’t allow payment after, people would drive off without paying. I do miss the days of an attendant doing it for you and cleaning windshield.

Oregon had a law that an attendant had to pump your gas and they had a deadly fire many years ago. I don’t know if they still have that.

My husband won’t use a place that pumps the gas because they might tend to be careless and drip a few spots on his car.

I never heard of paying first. How does one know if you are filling the tank how much it will cost? Even when specifying the dollar amount, I never paid first.
You go to the attendant, hand over $60 and say, "$60 on pump #7, please" when you expect it to cost about $50, then fill your tank. Return to the attendant for change and your receipt. Been doing this for 50 years without ever having a problem.

Some people might find it weird, but I rather enjoy pumping my own gas.

Not permitted in NJ to pump your own gas. We specify, the attendant does as told and then we pay.

When a person drives off without paying at the pump in NJ, a State Trooper appears at you door the next day, latest. You pay.
