Planning a Summer Vacation?

Anyone making plans for a summer vacation?

Right now I’d really like to be. Just have to figure out some logistics.

The first trip will likely be to see my daughters in Ontario. If things work out for that, we’ll try to co-ordinate it with another place. Perhaps to Quebec City. That is similar to visiting Europe. We’ve been once. It’s a unique experience.

We also do short camping trips for a few days. Sometimes just for one night, just because.

In the UK we tend to use the word 'holiday' instead of 'vacation' for all occasions. I suppose that in the past, the only time people people had off work were 'holy days'.
We have plenty of ideas, but rarely plan ahead. That's the joy of retirement - you can be flexible with your travel plans. Our daughters will be here over Easter, and the elder one will be here in the summer, so we never go away at those times. Anyway, it's too busy (and expensive) with the school holidays . Hopefully everything will be OK with Covid etc.. and a winter holiday will be possible - but we'll think about that in December!

No. I haven't had an actual trip vacation since 1998. I'd love to take one. Don't know where I'd go though. I'm already worried about summer in California. Fires. Plus I have the cats and the ferals at work.

I'm planning a Great Escape for this summer. Not sure where I will end up. I drove up to The Yukon last August but couldn't cross into Alaska nor the Northwest Territories as the borders were all closed. I even saw a menacing RCMP cruiser sitting side ways just before the border between Stewart, BC and Hyder, Alaska. Distance was only 3 miles but I couldn't go. Checked Google Map and Fairbanks, Alaska is a whopping 3,000 miles or 4,247 km from my home. Guess that makes it a nice "Sunday" drive. Even Los Angeles is closer and so is Washington, DC. Always wanted to see that National Geographic Explorer's Hall there. Not sure yet where I will go. Just sure that I will go some where.

I'm thinking about a car trip due to all the freedom it gives me. Don't know if I could stand all those rules and regulations regarding Covid masks should I fly and rent?

Since retiring from 4 decades of high tech work in 2017, everyday I wake up now is a "vacation" or at least Saturday. What you actually mean is a trip somewhere away from whatever residence. Because over decades I've lived in California that has an abundance of world class natural areas, I with a landscape and nature photography "hobby" have been visiting such places regularly all my adult life both during actual paid vacation days as well as weekends. Also during winters ski Tahoe resorts many days. But all those activities are relatively cheap unlike what most people consider vacations.

June fishing trip to Florida, July fishing trip to British Columbia and a visit with my brother and his family in Montana, and still thinking...
Fishing in Florida in summer can be challenging, unless you go fresh water fishing. The Gulf waters get very warm, generally in the low to mid 80’s by mid to late June. If you want to fish the Gulf, consider a charter out to the middle grounds, which is considered the fishing grounds at that time of the year. I would also recommend using a fish finder to get the depth needed to drop your line.

I haven’t fished the Atlantic off the Florida coast in years, but taking a charter out and listening to the advice of your Captain may get you a nice trophy fish. I have fished the North Atlantic, but not too far out, maybe only 10-11 miles, and I was able to catch several varieties.

Impossible to make plans now but I will surf the web and look at places I would like to go and imagine myself there.....almost as good.

Jules, if you are in Ontario, and around my neck of the woods in Chatham, look me up, I'll put the kettle on.

Yep, the middle grounds are my plan.

I have a friend with a good 32' boat with all the electronics. Try to get out with him at least 1 once a year. We usually try to stay overnight on his boat, a 36 hour trip.

Have you fished the middle grounds?

Most productive bottom fishing I have found in Florida, and in June we should be able to keep red and gag grouper as well as red snapper. Last year got a 34 inch red snapper.

I have had "vacations from work", but couldn't go anywhere, and for the last 30 years or so, I worked for myself and not so much as a day off. Now, last couple years, not working, but haven't the energy to haul around the equipment that keeps me breathing for more than a trip to the grocery store., since there is no one to lend a hand.
