What was your favorite car?

I need to to go to San Francisco , several Marine's were getting married the next day , this guy comes up ,and offers me a 1957 convertible for a hundred dollars, I got it, it was a beautiful car, we drove to San Francisco for the weddings, then drove back , I parked it ouside the gate , because the on base pass had expired, left the signed title on the dash, with the keys , at 0800 the next day, borded a plane for my return trip to Viet Nam.

Here's a photo of mine, a '66 Mustang.

We bought it new when I got my discharge from the Navy. That's my wife and oldest son at the house we rented at the time. Here's a model I built of it.

I loved that car, but we traded it in for a station wagon when our second son was born.

I had a '66 Mustang, too! That was probably around 1976 or so. It was white with a 289 engine from what I remember. I think I paid maybe $500 for it, since it had a bit of rust, but otherwise was in good shape.

My favorite car was probably my sky-blue '68 Camaro convertible that I had around the same time. I went through a lot of cars back then so I'm not sure the exact years when I owned these cars. I also had a '68 Camaro SS 396 and a few other Camaros, a Dodge Challenger...

I had a '66 Mustang, too! That was probably around 1976 or so. It was white with a 289 engine from what I remember. I think I paid maybe $500 for it, since it had a bit of rust, but otherwise was in good shape.

I don't remember the exact year of it, (65 or 66), but, my Mustang, painted Cadillac firemist gold) didn't fair too well against a cement bridge abutment. While the damage didn't look bad at first glance, the frame (well, uni body) was diamonded and therefore a total loss. At least I kept the 289 hi-po engine and 4 speed for another project.

The '69 Z28 was what I used to dream of owning. That was peak Camaro. I think the new Camaro's design is based on the '69, or it looks like it to me, anyway. If you compare the two, they're very similar.

Oh, our friends have the 2021 Kona - it's a very fine little SUV! We went out with them and test drove a bunch of cars: the Sonata, the RAV4, the Mazdas CX5 and CX3.

Everybody raves about the CX5 but all of us liked the Kona better - roomier, quieter, better infotainment system (one of the very best, actually; really easy to use and fast response), good gas mileage (she has to drive to work 3x/week).

They got the turbo-4 engine. Which did you get?

I hear you about the MB Gullwing. I had an older friend who passed up a Gullwing for $5K decades ago and never stopped regretting it. But he had young kids at the time and knew he just couldn't afford the expense + partial restoration/maintenance. It was the time of life when one has to be practical, sigh.

2018 Kona, SEL, standard engine. The SEL had the electronics I was looking for, and unfortunately included a sun roof I never use. The engine has good acceleration on the low end, but is lacking in the 40 -45 range. One other minor shortcoming -- rear seat leg room. All in all I am very fond of the car. No intention of replacing it in the near term, but I'm pretty sure our next car will be electric. I'm holding out for a Level 4. Musk keeps promising one, but has yet to deliver.

One of my favorite cars was the car I owned in the late '90s through the early 2000s — a 1988 Honda Prelude Si. It handled like a real sportscar and was a blast to drive. Although it was small, it had plenty of legroom due to a long seat track that allowed the seat to slide back almost to the back seat. I put a roof-rack on it so I could carry my skis or my mountain bike. I think I even hauled some furniture on it from time to time.

It was extremely reliable until one really hot summer when the dashboard melted along with some of the electronics, and then the driver's seat bracket broke. I sold it for a few hundred dollars to some kid who said he was going to fix it.

That was my last fun car. I've been driving Honda Accords ever since.

The most favorite car I had was a 1954 Oldsmobile 88 Rocket. A green on green two tone four door that was comfortable to ride in and to drive. You could put the petal down and it would take off like a rocket and yet it was fuel efficient. Times when I would mileage check it would get 18 to 24 miles per gallon. I bought this car in 1972 when it was 18 years old, and I was 21 years old. I was a nice smooth comfortable car that someone could almost live in.

I had a used 2004 VW Passat in metallic green with sunroof and heated leather seats that I really loved, even though it had issues numerous garage trips didn’t seem to fix, and Hitler’s voice whispered things to me from within it…

I had a yellow 1972 AMC Gremlin. That thing had a 20 gallon gas tank. Back then I could fill it for $5. Now a 5 gallon tank costs $20 to fill.

Wow! That is the exact color and style of 1972 AMC Gremlin I owned. It was the first new car I bought. Mine was 3-speed floor shift with folding rear seats. Prom night in 1973, I put a mattress in the car for a lakeside venture with my date.
I added fat wheels and fat tires topped off with chrome baby moon hubcaps.

This was the first car I owned that wasn't a used car. Yes, I bought a Yugo. It spent more time in the shop than it spent on the road. It always died at a traffic light. I was in the intersection blocking traffic, and people we so kind. I hated to sell it, I knew it was going to be a museum piece.
