Summer is over though we are still getting the occasional 32 degree days. (90F)

I have been waiting for cooler weather so I can plant more native plants and give them a better chance of surviving.
Can not plant new seedings at the height of summer. Max temps above 40 require too much watering.
Some plants never survived the summer. Gardening is trial and error. What survives is suitable, what dies is unsuitable.
I am only planting drought tolerant natives so as to reduce the need to water.
I might wait another week before getting out in the garden.
Need to enrich the soil with compost and layer mulch to preserve water.

I hear ya....We're the opposite here. I'm waiting for warmer and drier weather to get into my garden. I plowed it last Fall, and spread a bunch of leaves for compost/nutrients. Now, I'm waiting for it to dry enough to get my tiller out and prep the soil. Right now, the soil is so damp that I leave a path of deep footprints in it. Around here, I'm usually happy if I get the plants started by mid-May.

It is always good to get back into the garden. Brings a little pleasure and a sense of accomplishment.

Yes, I come from a "lineage" of farmers, so I guess it's in my blood. I just do it for a hobby, and in an average year I have far more than we can eat. So, the neighbors and the family get all the free cucumbers, cantaloupe, and tomatoes they want....IF I manage to keep the deers from eating half of it.
