No fuel again... petrol stations closed in my area

Here we go again.! Not the pandemic this time, but something else beginning with P, causing the lack of oil, and petroleum...

Petrol stations are few and far between here in the sticks.. so most of the towns in the area only have one Petrol station if any at all... I visited 3 separate towns today and all the garages were shut, no fuel at all.

Fortunately I have a a couple of gallons stored, and I still have 3/4 of a tank.. so I'll be ok for now.. but here we go again, people with empty fuel tanks , and garages dry.. and folks with no way of getting to work .. This causes such a knock on effect on everything.. particularly in the health sector and NHS waiting times for operations and procedures because Doctors and nurses cannot get to work... . The elderly at home who have daily care , will also be severely affected...

I've just come back from one of our Major supermarket branches in a nearby town. I stood in the queue to be served for 20 minutes because they're so short of staff, they only had one till manned... I was getting extremely concerned about the frozen fish I 'd bought thawing.. .

I would have used the self service tills but there was a huge queue for them and I had a full trolley and there's never enough room at the self service tills for a full cart..... and further to that 1/2 the shelves were empty ..seriously bare..( Morrisons for all the Brits reading this )... which will be due to the lack of diesel again for delivery trucks...

Putin!! Who else ?
Yes, unless/until something happens that removes Putin and his supporters from power, the European nations will be hit especially hard by the sanctions being levied against Russia. Perhaps the only solution would be to try to increase the imports from Saudi Arabia, and any other oil producing nations. However, that would take some time, and would probably not reduce the costs very much. The longer this mess lingers, the more economic impact it will have on nearly Every nation.

Like you Hollydolly I have to go to town to buy fuel, but I had no trouble and tanked up the car this morning at ASDA. Prices had come down slightly. No problems at the other petrol stations either, but they're more expensive. Rather than listening to the 'tree huggers' who want to stop oil production, we should be stepping up North sea production and making the UK self sufficient for oil.

A few shortages in the shops, but nothing I can't do without.

I was at work on the computer (we're all computerized now, finally) and one of those pop up news things came up. Putin's picture was in one of the boxes and I literally yelled out "I'm going to punch the computer screen!" Someone asked why and I said "Putin, popped up on a news feed!"
If you get the chance to punch him, give him one for me too...

Wow, I had no idea. Hopefully it will not last long, oil is a world market commodity but it may take a little while for things to sort themselves out. Prices may rise, but the oil is out there, it just needs to get to you.

No supply shortages here, but the prices are of course higher than a month ago...
I don't know what the equivalent in the USA is.. but our motorway service stations ( gas stations on the freeway) are traditionally always more expensive for fuel than town garages .. .. our fuel in petrol garages currently ( when it's available).. is an all time high of £1.62 per litre.. ( last week it was £1.68 per litre) .. but at the motorway services today my friend called and told me.. it was an astonishing £1.88 for unleaded fuel per litre... , that is around 25 pence a litre more than the already highest prices in town, I can see that before long it'll be £2.00 per litre here...

I just can't convert that to American. :(
2.00 pounds per litre. Are there 4 litres per US gallons? I'm so bad at math... even with the Internet I can't figure it out, but thinking Britain's petrol is about $10.00 a US gallon. That can't be right!!!

Somebody help, please!

there's 4.5 litres in an American gallon ( 5 litres in a UK gallon)...

so... £2.00 UK sterling is approx $2.61... 4.5 x $11.74 US dollars.. which is approx £9.00 UK pounds

Currently we're paying here an average of £1.65 for unleaded .. some places charging more, and of course the higher the octane the more expensive, but I use the cheapest unleaded, at an average high price of £1.65 per litre.. so 5 litres is £8.25 UK pounds , that is how much we're paying for ONE gallon of Petrol... and that equates to $10.77 US

ETA so you can see of course how these prices are affecting us in every way possible...., and further to that just 5 days ago our Utilities went up in price by over 50 %.... inflation is at 8 % and our basic pensions have risen by just 3 %

I think I paid about £1.57 / ltr. today. Fortunately Mrs. L's little VW gives about 60 mpg.

For the US, 1 US gallon = 3.78 ltrs so 1 US gall = £5.94 0r $7.78 at current rates. The UK and Europe are probably the most expensive place in the world.
it's actually 4.56 litres in a UK gallon.... ..there's nowehere around here who is selling fuel for £1.57 a litre... that's still very high of course, but a good 10 p a litre less than here...

pre covid, we were paying £1.19 per litre

Others have answered the cost per gallon or liter question, so I won't try to address that.

We used to have a lot of small service stations, but they disappeared in the 80s. And so did the "service". Almost all of our stations today are high volume serve yourself. While prices do vary a bit I am not sure there is much relationship to freeway proximity.

A note Oregon and New Jersey do not allow self-service, but have what they call mini-service, nothing but pumping gas. Its been 40+ years since I have seen a service station attendant clean a windshield or check the oil...

Gasoline price where I live $3.79/gal

British pound 1.68 = 2.19 usa dollars

Converting gal to liters .261472 gal = 1 liters

1 liter would cost .991 us dollar = .76 British pound

actually I'm wrong, used american liter conversion instead of UK liter, so US gas cheaper yet in comparison

Thanks, HD. I don't know how I guessed, but I wasn't too far off. My goodness, $10.77 per gallon! My Corolla holds 13 gals. $10.77 x 13=$140.01 to fill up!!!

Yes, I knew about your Utilities as well. So awful.

Is this due to the protests about fossil fuels and climate change? Just Stop Oil and Extinction Rebellion groups had decided to block petrol transports. Which leads to panic buying and more shortages, imho.

yes it's just terrible... for ex o/h car to fill up.. ( it being a high end sports car it now costs £177.00 for one tank of petrol )... for mine which is just a 4 cylinder... it costs £80..00... = $105.. US dollars ☹️😖😫

When I paid attention yesterday downtown gas was $1.92 a litre. 4 litres are near 1 Imperial gallon, more than an American gallon.
yes you're closer to paying almost as much as we are in the UK.... $1.92 Canadian dollars is = today of £1.17 Sterling...
