Illegal immigration is a continuing problem...especially in the SW states. It will likely get much worse in a few weeks when current rules are relaxed. However, the Texas Governor has a plan that would probably work better than anything done so far. If he can bus huge numbers of these immigrants to Washington, and set them up in huge homeless camps, surrounding all the government sites, perhaps that will get some much needed attention.

My idea for so many illegal emigrants coming into our country is to build communities or temporary town that they can live in. Then in exchange they will work in temporary factories producing products that can bring in an income for them and help the economy in the United States.

Not a bad idea, and maybe cheaper than a wall.
 
It seems to me this is another of our problems we are not willing to solve, reasonable compromises could find a workable way out. Here are a few things I think could work:
  • Grant special temporary legal status to those in the country today, make it easy to get, but clearly temporary until final decisions are made. To qualify people would need to register pretty quickly, and no new immigrants would get the status.
  • Issue a national id card, perhaps a passport, that anyone would need to have to work or get any kind of services. Make it easy to scan or enter the number to check the person out.
  • Stop allowing automatic citizenship by birth here, most countries don't do this.
  • Quickly deport anyone who does not have the card or registration.
  • Anyone who violates the rules should permanently lose the right to such as card.
  • Going forward these cards could be issued to new immigrants on a temporary basis, if they do not follow the rules again they would lose the right to such a card forever.
Then, only after this has been successfully implemented, begin the complex and difficult process of sorting out who can stay and who can apply for permanent residency or citizenship.

I believe some version of this could solve much of the problem. However we seem to lack the political will and willingness to compromise to do something like this...

All good, A'rob. I would also streamline Immigration Services. It's been an absolute mess here, especially since congress merged INS with Homeland Security. We need to make those 2 depts separate again but working together and to hire thousands more people for both. The US simply hasn't wanted to cover the cost because of increased spending elsewhere....mainly the military and relief programs, the latter primarily to ensure re-election.

Now, there is a great idea. Might work here in Canada too where our governments "welcomes all." It's all nice and good to welcome the world into your country but you have to think what these immigrants need: housing, schools, jobs and medical care. The price of most homes in Canada are rather "out of this world." Immigrants don't arrive here with millions of dollars sticking out of their pant pockets.

While flipping through the news channels, a little while ago, they are saying that the government is giving out free Smart Phones to these illegals, so they can be tracked and alerted for their immigration hearings. If that's happening, it probably won't be long before the streets in Texas, AZ, and New Mexico are littered with crushed cell phones.

But soon after the press conference, Abbott's office released more details about the plan that struck a notably softer tone.

The governor's office clarified that the program is completely voluntary for migrants and would happen only after they had been processed and released by the Department of Homeland Security. And in addition to buses, Abbott also ordered the state to charter flights to transport migrants to the nation's capital. The migrants would have to show documentation that they had already been processed by DHS. Many immigration advocates have noted that providing transportation services for asylum-seekers to reach their final destination is something the state should invest in.

Abbott's announcement led to immediate criticism from both his left and his right. Immigration rights groups said his rhetoric was still dangerous.

"Any forcible busing of migrants across the country would be outrageous and blatantly unconstitutional," Kate Huddleston, a staff attorney at ACLU of Texas, said in a statement. "Given that Abbott cannot dictate where people are sent, he has already backpedaled on this heinous plan, announcing that it will be only voluntary."

Too bad for the internet these days. Everybody has their opinion and want to use it as a sword.
Maybe we and this includes the internet, needs to take a deep breath, step back and see all the facts (if their is such a thing any more).
ASK MORE QUESTIONS, see both sides of the (not your) fence. Long term and short term.
Slow the stone throwing and bad mouthing.
Also, if your not from Texas and you do not live on its border take a big Texas step back.
 
For me, I find the problem of illegal immigration in America ( can’t speak to other countries) to be so very complex. I am sure I don’t grasp all the issues. I try to keep an open mind and see different sides.

Two solutions mentioned in previous posts I agree with though -

Stop allowing automatic American citizenship by birth.

Improve the bogged down, bureaucratic mess that is Immigration Service.

I try to always remember we are talking about fellow human beings, some good, some bad, some desperate, and most -probably hopeful. Much like my own ancestors who ( while not illegal) were immigrants.

If the illegals are bused to the steps of the Capital, Washington won't be able to turn a blind eye to the problem anymore.
They (Washington) created this mess, and they need to solve it. ... not Texas

As long as Texas lets these illegals pour over the border, as has been the case up to the present, Washington will continue to do nothing.



Also, if your not from Texas and you do not live on its border take a big Texas step back.

To do that we would have to have an amendment to an amendment. Then, that must be passed by 2/3 of senate & congress; if passed then it has to be ratified by legislatures of three-fourths of the states.

There is no way out of this process; it is in the Constitution.
 
A state governor has no authority to do what Abbott is proposing.

Enforcement of the country’s immigration laws lies with the federal government and not a state.

He's seeking publicity in order to advance his bid for re-election.

It probably would take a constitutional amendment, and that would be the most straight forward way. We have amended the Constitution before, its not impossible.

The issue is however not entirely clear, what the Constitution says in the first sentence of the 14th Amendment is:

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.

Though as you say a Constitutional amendment would be the cleanest way to fix this.

Speaking for myself, my own ancestors were immigrants (as are most of us) that came to this country through the gates at Ellis island wanting to become Americans, not to change America to their home country. Yes, they kept some traditions from their home land BUT they called themselves American not original country then Americans.
