Kangaroos - wallabies are in this class as well, Possums, Koalas and Wombats.
Wombats are small marsupials that look like a cross between a Bear, a Pig and a Gopher.
They are built for digging, with short legs, compact heads, short broad feet and strong claws.
Like kangaroos, koalas and other marsupials, they have a pouch.
But a wombat's pouch is backwards so when it is digging, the soil does not go into the pouch.
Wombats grow to a length of 3 to 4 1/2 feet and weigh between 20 - 35kg - 44lb - 77lb.

Wombats are nocturnal and are rarely seen by the public. I have never seen on in the wild.
I have seen where they have been because their digging creates a mini "ploughed" area.
Wombats have up to twelve burrows in it's home range with 3 or 4 main burrows.
Most of the time, wombats remain in their burrows to stay out of the heat.
However, they venture out at night and in cooler mornings and evenings to graze.
Their diet consists of grass, shrubs, roots, bark, and moss. To accommodate their fibrous diet, their teeth grow on a continual basis to balance out the constant wear.
Wombats grunt to ward off intruders
Wombats are found mostly on the East Coast of Australia while there are Southern Hairy Nosed Wombats in Western Australia.
With 60,000 - 130,000 of this species Australia wide.
Wombats breed on a seasonal basis. Their mating is timed so that the most vegetation is available when the offspring is ready to be weaned.
Mating generally occurs in the winter months.
A Wombat will have 1 joey each breeding season.

The joey will remain in the pouch for 6-8 months and will fully mature at 2 years old.
In the wild, wombats generally live around 5 years, but in captivity, their lifespan can reach as much as 30 years.
