Jewel is a recent rescue from a puppy mill. Because of her past, she is under socialized and therefore shy and nervous and will need a patient and understanding adopter. She would benefit from a home with another dog to help her learn housetraining, etc. and to help her gain confidence. Please call the shelter for additional information or to schedule an appt to come meet her!

Wife and I are interested in Bernese Mountain Dog, we see the dog today. Changing her name to Sadie. Life expectancy for Bernese Mountain Dog is 6-7 years, she produced puppies in a puppy mill so she hasn't had a family outside of her previous environment. With the addition of Sadie we will care for 3 dogs instead of 2.

Those are beautiful dogs. I've never had personal experience with them, but when I look at those hundreds of dog variety photos, I always stop and admire the Bernese. My Golden Retriever puppy is now in his eleventh week. I've had him since his 8th week. I've done the puppy thing before, but never by myself. I love him already, but going through puppy hood is stressful for me. He is learning, however. I'm am blown away the for the first time at how much learning an 11 week old puppy is capable of. He's not a "doggy Einstein," of course, but he's getting there. Right now he understands when he poops outside, he gets a treat. Think about it. That's progress. Sometimes I think he may even be trying to make me think he's pooping just so he gets a treat. Not sure if this is on the right track or not. lol

I wish the best for your new family member. Teaching a dog who has been trained to believe life isn't exciting must be a challenge that goes way beyond what I'm experiencing.

Congratulations, you're very kind to give Sadie a loving home after all the abuse she's been through. I've met a few over the years, great dogs, beautiful.

Several years ago,I very much wanted a Bernie, however they do not do well in hot weather and given that the summers where I lived were very, very hot most days,I passed. Apparently, like rabbits, they need to be kept cool with frozen water bottles and I just didn`t have the freezer space lol.

A friend had a wonderful Bernie that just passed away last year at age 9,so yes,9-10 is probably a more realistc life expectancy.

Sadie update: When we met Sadie for the first time. Scared, she tired hide, I learned she came from an Amish puppy mill ring in Ohio and the handlers grabbed animals by scruff of the neck to move them about. I did not know this at the time of our first encounter but it makes sense as when I petted Sadie on the head she winced in anticipation of pain. My wife stroked Sadie beneath her chin along her neck, this was soothing to her.

Sadie is a flight risk so we must exercise extra precaution to prevent her from running away. Sadie seems in good health. Monday, Sadie is getting spayed and having her teeth cleaned, we pick her Tuesday.

I feel good about Sadie coming to live in our home. We have two established female dogs plus cats. I believe Sadie will learn social skills from Shyla and Kit Kat, Border Collie mix. We have two large dog crates and another a smaller crate to be delivered tomorrow. We live in a large 2-story house with a fenced-in yard in a quiet neighborhood.

Sadie's understanding of belonging and the family unit is so sad. Imagine the limitations of a puppy mill breeder animal. No other purpose but impregnation and producing babies. There is nothing romantic about canine reproduction. No time to bond with a mate or puppies. Year after year deplorable conditions and life of a puppy mill breeding animal.
