WOW, possible Active shooter near Rochester NY airport proves false alarm

What a morning. I was in Rochester, heading north on the Expressway toward an appointment with my PCP. Suddenly I am seeing dozens of cop cars going south..lights and sirens, Sheriff, state police. I am thinking WTF, glad I am going other way;
While I was waiting for doctor, I checked the local news sites. Said they were heading towards an active shooter report, on a road that runs buy our airport.
I am now hearing on the local news it was a false alarm. I think they were also on high alert because of what happened in Buffalo last week..the shooter at the grocery store.

Hi Marie,all this week here in Buffalo there were a couple 'bomb threats' at area stores which turned out to be false,didn't surprise me. My church got a couple 'threats, the police&FBI were notified,now we hired a security guard,its a troubling time right now Sue
 

In 1996, I was running arts shows...poetry readings, gallery openings, music nights...all kinds of things.

One of the regulars at our shows, was in the security field. Her regular job was working in and for the fashion industry. She would go to various stores and boutiques to see if the merchandise being sold was fakes...industry knock-offs.

So, anyway, the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games was coming up. And she got a security job down there.

That was the time when a bombing event was falsely assigned to the security guard Richard Jewel.

I spoke to our friend just after that event. I asked her if she was ok, and what things were like down there.

I said something like...I hear you guys dealt with a couple of bomb threats and an actual explosion.


She just paused and said something like..."a couple of bomb threats?" - we've gotten about 30!!!"...they were just never reported in the news.

These security people, law enforcement...they are constantly dealing with many serious, serious incidents that never get reported in the news.

And things can get skewed, because when one incident hits the news....the news media will then start to report all these kinds of incidents, that they generally never report. Because it is a "hot topic." And that skews the perception of what is going on.

Because, generally, there are always a lot of things going on....a lot!

And, of course, that is why our law enforcement people are constantly doing an amazing job protecting us...and in ways that we never really see.

Sad to hear. Do you think it was copy cats to last week?

I don't think copy cats are a common thing. I think they exist, but are not all that common. More likely, tons of these things happen all the time...and now they are just reporting more of what is always going on.
