Young People Don’t Watch TV?

Do young people watch TV? When I’ve been around young people, they didn’t watch TV. They were on their devices, no interest in the TV. My friend recently said the same thing about her grandchildren and this got me wondering. Even our children in their 40s say they don’t watch much TV and if they do it’s something like Netflix or a sporting event. Again, they often use their devices.

Taking a guess, I’d say most of the programming isn’t geared towards them. All I can think of is Big Brother.

Maybe they don't watch network TV, but I think they watch some TV, at least movies and maybe whatever show is popular enough for their friends to be talking about. I'm just basing this on my daughter and her boyfriend though, so maybe not a representative sample.

My son and daughter in law watch TV and fiddle with their phones in synchronicity.
Same in my family.

They've all gone from watching one device to watching two devices, and they still complain about being bored.

When we were kids being bored was much cheaper than it is today! :giggle:

My children and grands watch the TV, but not "free, over the air" network shows with commercials, other than some sports.

Instead, they choose the channel that broadcasts what interests them, rather than whatever ABC, NBC and CBS are pushing that season and in that time slot.

To watch movies they tune into Netflix, Hulu, Prime or similar. Kids shows? Those same channels along with Disney Plus and others. For nature shows they turn on Discovery, Nat Geo, Animal Planet, etc. .

Today's TV watchers prefer a la carte choices rather than the fixed menu we all grew up with. I've become the same way.

Big brother? I think it's the era they grew up in, geared towards the internet, which offers a broader, more interactive experience, rather than just passive viewing, like with conventional TV.

I would bet my house that our TV isn’t on more than 6 hours a week. Most of the air time is spent on devices or outside. We have nine TV’s in this house, one in each bedroom, plus kitchen, great room, den and patio. My cable bill is atrocious. Yes, we are a little nutty.

We got married in 1968, we bought our first TV in 1999, and that was only because my mother-in-law was addicted to day time soaps. Whenever we mentioned to her about coming to visit, there was always some reason why she couldn't. One day my wife was chatting to her mother and our lack of a TV just came out, so we bought a TV.

The reason that we didn't have a television was simply because when we were younger all our free time was spent dancing, latin & ballroom dancing. We competed, we trained, we rehearsed, we choreographed and we travelled. There simply wasn't time for television.

My, my! I'm 76 and I don't watch TV either. I hate the speed, the noise, the advertising and all the silly shows. Maybe these kids are smarter than our generation. However, if you ask me, most of these kids are suffering from a bad addiction problem. They are controlled by their phones.

Interesting responses because, it seems to me, that most tv programmes are directed at young people. Too much of today's dramas are about making statements and influencing young minds. It would seem that it's missing its mark.

most non-gadget tv is made specifically for us old folks. old shows, commercials solely about
some kind of INS, pills, or disease.
they def know their audience. it is not the youngins who get all their escape from their gadgets
or games.

most non gadget tv is game shows and butt dance shows and dance around shows.
...made for the youngins.
we get INS and diseases. lolol.

We haven't "cut the cord" yet, can't get the wife to commit fully. Same with the landline 2 monthly bills we wouldn't miss.
