How much of your city/town do you actually visit?

First off, best wishes for your surgery! Where are the traffic lanes and cars, like in the USA? (We don't have broad, pedestrian-only areas in very many places.) As for myself, my travel is limited to less than 3 square miles, unless someone else is driving. When I am a passenger, I'm always amazed at how things have changed since the last time I was out and about! I have a small life - a true homebody. My grocery, pharmacy, and doctor are all within that limited range. The township that I live in and the nearest city have nothing much to offer. Besides, I enjoy my home-life!
Thank you. Two malls in the CBD - downtown - are closed to traffic

9 million - that's nearly twice the population of Scotland o_O It's a long time since I've been in London, mainly to courses at offices on the South Bank. I can't say that I'm fond of large cities although I worked in a number of them. I stayed in Amsterdam for almost 3 years and walked through a lot of the city. The centre is quite compact and easy to get around.
Favourite city was Hamburg (Germany).
yes 9 million... and that's just what the govt knows about there's probably at least another 1/4 or 1/2 million living in people's back yards illegally..

I was in Glasgow a few years ago, and was stunned at the population number there now too... yet only 660,000 apparently...

I would move back to Scotland if I could find a smallish town with good hospitals and facilities very close by... I wouldn't necessarily want to live in the city again due to the high crime levels in most cities..

Yes Bretrick ... best wishes! Hope you are doing better.

As for your question, I live outside of Houston, Texas
I have not been inside of the incorporated limits of the city in over 10 years.
The massive freeway system terrifies me .... the photo below is only the NW branch of that system.

I've seen most of my hometown,Buffalo,NY,. There are places in the city I have no way of getting to I'm at a disadvantage as a non driver, but if I know the area,I'll take the local bus /metro rail to ck it out. I did this 5 yrs ago, went to 'Canal Side' which is located by the waterfront. It was nice to see new hotels/stores,on the weekends its really crowded. For so many yrs downtown was 'dead' now its coming back
My close friend,Marcia&I used to go on monthly 'road trips' together, one time we had lunch downtown , then she took me places I had no way of getting to,it was great

Yes Bretrick ... best wishes! Hope you are doing better.

When I worked for three months in Houston, the local joke was ‘it takes an hour to get to Houston from Houston’. Not a fun city in which to be on-call

same in London.... to get anywhere in the city takes forever , which is why most people use the tube... but worse is trying to get into the city from here in the outskirts by road. London city centre is 20 miles door to door from my house.. it can take anything up to 3 hours to drive in, depending on the time of day. I always drive into North London because that's 20 mins by road, before hitting the congestion.. but always get the Train into central London.

My husband used to work in SE London, which meant a train into the city.. and 3 tubes... to get to work at 5am... took 5 hours of travel every single day ..and at the mercy of the high cost of train travel and the ever greedy striking rail staff.. not to mention railways maintenance which is constantly ongoing, and cancels the trains for buses... which take even longer

Whilst I was on the bus into the city this morning it came to me that I see very little of the total city of Perth.
Population of 2.21 million people spread over 6,400 sq km.
I travel to and from work, 16 km each way. I go to my local shopping centre, 1km away, I visit the river regularly, 5km away and I go to local sporting matches. All within 10km of home.
Being in the city this morning I took a couple of photographs of the CBD, Murray Street Mall and Forrest Place.
Almost devoid of people at 10am.

I am on the bus to Hollywood Hospital for my operation so may not be able to respond for a while to anyone who responds to this post
Wishing you quick recovery from your surgery. Beautiful pictures.

The town in which I live has a population of less than 5000. There are a number of small shops that I am still finding when I turn down a street that I've never been on before. In the distance there are mountains and many church steeples, farms and little country stores. I still have much to explore here even though I've lived in this community for nearly eight years.

There are neighboring small towns, each with its own character. I need to explore those, too.

When I park at my town's grocery store, I can see the whole town simply by looking left and right.
you can pretty much do that here ...the town centre.. but not the whole town..

I remember when I first moved here when I was 19.. I went to explore to see what the town centre had to offer...As a teen from a Bustling city I'd been used to going out on the town , to discos at the time.. and all that city life had to offer.

I walked down into town from where we'd landed, following the Town centre signs... and missed it completely. I walked until there was no signs, and was thorughly confused, so I walked back and realised that the one little main street with a sprinkling of small stores was IT... what a disappointment for a teenager

Thanks for the lovely photos, @Bretrick! I tend to explore any town or city I've lived in - and their neighboring towns. I particularly don't like extremes, like congested cities or extremely rural (don't see your neighbors for miles) areas. I might go there for a visit but not to live there! I prefer living in a suburban area within 20 minutes or so from a big city. This way I get the best of both worlds, quiet at home, and excitement and culture in the city. I live within 5-10 minutes of shopping, p.o., library, hospital, community college, freeway, etc. I honestly have gotten too comfortable here to go out and about lately, especially after covid! Before, I used to travel more.

Good luck with your surgery and wishing you a speedy recovery!

I know my town and the surrounding towns very well, have visited many points of interest, and also shown them to visiting friends. 🏘️ 🏢 🏦🏭🏨🏛️

I hope your surgery goes well. Good luck! :)
