Prime Fees vs Walmart Fees

I've about decided that Amazon has had their claws into me much too long. I've noticed that more and more items are ineligible for Prime shipping. Case in point was a porch glider pad cost $12 to ship it to my home from Texas. Took about a week to arrive, too bad it was the right color and size. Prime went up in price a few months back, now $139. I've had a few things shipped via Walmart with acceptable glitches, but weren't show stoppers. Walmart's free shipping is $98, saving $41 annually. Have others noticed? Free shipping is not the carrot it once was. Prime's streaming content is also questionable, Hulu beats them hands down.

I usually check Amazon when I'm buying something online....and 99% of the time I find a better deal elsewhere. Jeff Bezos didn't become filthy rich by doing consumers a favor.
I wonder if manufacturers are deciding that giving away the shipping costs are productive. It's funny what we as consumers are willing to pay for convenience?

I ditched Amazon Prime three years ago. It wasn't worth it. Often, items I ordered missed the two-day delivery. Orders over $25.00 qualify for free shipping. I've never ordered less than that amount, and I've always gotten it in a week or less. I really don't need two-day delivery. As far as Prime streaming goes, I do better elsewhere.

Amazon prime here has been £79 per year for a long time.. it's very handy for me.. because both estranged O/H and get our things for that one delivery price, despite different addresses...

I still check other places for cheaper versions of what I'm looking for, and I buy sometimes from other online retailers, but tbh, with Amazon, I'm not only getting my stuff delivered fast, I'm kept up-to-date the whole way.. and like this week..I got an item that wasn't fit for purpose.. and I complained, and within an hour my money was back in my account.. ..hard to beat that really...

I continued with Amazon Prime for another year. I agree with Holly, it's very convenient and is often (though not always) the lowest price. It's been a godsend at Christmastime, for sure.

On the rare occasion when I have a problem they refund my money immediately with zero argument. Returns couldn't be easier.

I don't bother with Prime Video because there are other things more interesting to watch. If I did nothing but watch TV 24/7 for the rest of my life, I'd never run out of interesting viewing.

The other day my vegetable peeler broke. After only about 25 years of use, can you imagine? :p I ordered an OXO peeler from Amazon yesterday. $11.99 (cheapest price anywhere) and will be delivered today.

Prime or not, I've never had a problem returning an item to Amazon or getting a refund. ;)
However, like @StarSong rightly says, we also get so many other things included in the Prime package..Prime Video for one.. without prime we wouldn't have that either, so it's cheap at the price.. Our Prime membership for all we get , including the prime Video... for 2 houses here works out at about 80p each per week

I have not had any problem with Amazon at all. It is very rare that anything I buy is not shipped free. That is not Amazon's fault it has to do with the seller that is using Amazon to sell their products. If something I buy is going to take a longer shipping time it tells you that when you are ordering. I have saved so much money with shipping because of Amazon Prime and it is more than the cost of Prime. Prime is $7.55 a month for me and it was raised a dollar recently but remember they are paying more for gas and other things as well.

I love Prime Video and that is what I use for watching television. They make it possible to watch YouTube videos on my television. Plus all the other channels that are available for free (and not just free trials either). I never say there is nothing to watch anymore. Everybody in my building pays for cable and they are always complaining about the cost.

Amazon is my first choice when I am shopping online. I buy some items at Walmart (online) but I do not use their membership program (yet). I used to buy a lot on eBay but their prices are usually more now or the same as Amazon. Amazon is faster.

If you’re determined to work your Prime membership a bit, you can usually get some of the value out of it. I don’t order a lot by mail from Amazon, but they do have almost everything, including hard to find items like things to pull the core out of strawberries. Every month I can usually find a few movies or series to watch on Prime video when regular TV is dismal or reruns. Prime will also give you greater access to free music and e-books…

We order a lot from Amazon. Sometimes strange hardware things, other times just odds and ends. Its worth it to us to have Prime. Rarely order from any other online service, and when I do, it seems to take forever to get here and there's always a minimum for free shipping.

Some things Amazon is cheaper on, also. With the Amazon card, you get 5% discount. We're still happy with it.

I've lost interest in Amazon when it stopped being the economical customer oriented giant it started out as. And in the early days, I was a big fan, but as they captured the huge market share they certainly deserved and ran out of growth from that, they began finding ways to squeeze both their customers and employees. People now buy from Amazon mostly out of habit, not for their pockets, and not for convenience. I still buy things from them when they are not available anywhere else, but it bothers me when I do.

My new go to place I always check with is ebay, cheaper, faster, and free shipping most of the time. There are still sellers asking absurd prices for items on ebay, but these can be sorted out by showing the cheapest prices first (including shipping costs if there are any), and their speed of shipping usually beats Amazon by a long shot, unless you pay Amazon for Prime, and now it sounds like Amazon is even starting to milk their prime customers for anything extra they can get.

But be careful on ebay. You can't assume their prices will always be cheaper, so you still have to search. A lot of ordinary retailers, now selling on line beat Amazon on prices and shipping, and I often find the best buy, just by typing in the product, rather than the outlet. Places I never heard of show up, and sometimes they are selling items for dollars less than even ebay, with reasonable and/or no shipping charges and they can be lighting fast on delivery.

For those who don't have Amazon Prime, items can sit in the warehouse for a whole week before they are shipped. I think this is Amazon's way of punishing those who don't want or need Prime. One of the things that turned me off about Amazon was their shipping times. After they introduced two day shipping for $100 a year, everything else that was ordinarily "two or three day" became a week, and those shipping costs went up, and if you are in a rural area, "two day" is seldom "two day" anyway.

They do have a huge inventory. I'm still impressed by that. If something is not available anywhere else, Amazon usually has it.

I agree.. and I have an Amazon Credit card , and I get a £10 gift card every few months depending on how much I've spent..

Last week, when I bought the Leaf blower, I used the gift card against it.. so when I rejected the blower, and asked for a refund they not only refunded my money but they refunded the gift card as well..in fact they refunded the gift card first. Most bricks and mortar stores won't do that..

The other thing is time... I have had 2 books delivered this week.. not on my kindle, but actual hardback books .... they're at vastly reduced prices, in great condition like new in fact... . To find those, I would have had to trawl around store after store, and probably several towns, and even then no guarantee I'd find them, or at the reduced prices I got them for... . Further to that I am able to read the specs of the books, and the reviews left by current owners, and decide whether I'd enjoy the books.. before I buy...

Living in a semi rural area, it's far more economical for me to use Amazon.. than to have to drive to the nearest large towns or cities, and even then the stores only have half the stock they once carried... When I ask for a certain size or style which they don't have in stock.. they don't say they will order it, and get it in for me.. as they once would have, instead they tell me to order it myself online.. so then why would I even bother going to those stores in the first place..pay for parking, pay for fuel... ? I may as well stay home and buy on Amazon

yes because Amazon isn't a store.. people forget that. Amazon is a warehouse for thousands of stores and businesses of every description, and that's why you can find things there that you wouldn't find on your high street . For example, my O/H 's hobby is making copies of High end watches. he's excellent at his craft, and it's difficult even for an expert to tell the difference between a real one, and one of his.. but to get the actual real deal parts, it's impossible to buy anything like that on the high street in Bricks and mortar stores..it's specialist thing.. so Amazon.. or other online specialist watchmakers were there .....also the genuine tools needed for making and repairing watches are not easily sourced, again.. Amazon...

For all the flack it gets, it's a superb concept..

I have debated joining the Prime services of Amazon as I order a lot on line, but I never pay shipping on orders and I use different book services, mostly Book Buddy to get discounts, and I have Netflix for movies so, for now I can't justify the yearly cost for their service, I may change my mind later.

I've never had a problem with Amazon Prime, always get my purchase in the 2 days time frame
I don't live near Walmart, the one time I was in there, wasn't impressed with what I saw
What I didn't know about Walmart before I started searching online, is that Walmart also has a huge inventory that is not available in their stores. I recently ordered 4 extra dumbbell weights that were below the free shipping amount, but I just included the dumbbells with, my grocery pickup order and the shipping was free (iron weights aren't the cheapest thing to ship by UPS or FedEx).

I seldom go in the stores since the pandemic and it's easier to add items to my Walmart shopping list when I see I'm getting low, and then once a week, I go there, and they bring the stuff out to the car, and any single item not available in the store gets shipped free as part of the whole.

If you are looking for something better than medium quality, Walmart is probably not going to be your best choice. For weight lifting equipment, not even ebay can play in the same ball park with Walmart. I don't know why, but it's just one of those things that seems to be "underpriced" at Walmart.

I didn't realize it got much flack. Most people I know still think of Amazon as their go to online outlet. I've always felt like the odd one out.
No they are highly criticised world wide.. it's often said they treat their staff badly.. not true as it turns out, they allowed cameras in to watch how their stff works, . they don't pay enough taxes in many countries..that's true... and there's many complaints generally about the concept.. probably from competitors..

It's not perfect..but what business is these days..not many if any... and given that Amazon employ so many people worldwide, in every capacity.. and have to deal with customers and business owners in their millions, I think they do a fantastic job

I have never paid shipping on Amazon purchases. I just save items to my cart until I meet the minimum for free shipping. Like others, I don't bite at any of the annual perk deals. For me, they would never turn out to be deals at all.
