TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Florida woman was arrested Thursday after police said she hid her mother’s body in a freezer to continue collecting the woman’s disability benefits.

On April 28, 2022, police in the city of Sebastian found the body of Marie Hoskins inside a chest freezer while conducting a welfare check at her home.

A similar situation occurred years ago on the local Indian reservation.

A very old gentleman on the reservation was collecting a railroad pension. The man’s daughter used to take his check to the bank and endorse it every month.

When the old man died his daughter buried him in the shade of his favorite resting place and continued cashing his checks for several years.

Finally the railroad ran a report of all pensioners over a certain age and sent out people to investigate.

As far as I know all the railroad did was stop sending the checks.

I dont understand why someone would put a human body in a freezer. It seems to me a beter way would be to take the body and her car to a unused river bank and sit the body up and put a fishing pole in its hand and park the car in the weeds. Then if anyone asks just say " Oh she went fishing somewhere".

I'm sure a decaying body would have tipped somebody off that something was wrong...

I believe there is more of this out there then we know and frankly i think if they did more welfare checks like that.

Imagine if you will many of these are for the SS check if this goes on for months and sometimes years ......
NO one..... the pension fund or SS gets their money back.
Most older folks visit doctors and one person in my area had not had any visits in some time found her son was using her SS money and she was gone for quite awhile before it was uncovered.

I saw a true crime story on ID a few years ago where two older sisters where living together. The one sister dies while sleeping on the sofa. The other sister needed her SS to maintain her living expenses. She covered her sister and left her lay on the sofa. Must have smelled awful, but once the decomposition was over, she had become fossilized. I think this was on one of the Lt. Kenda shows, who is from Colorado Springs.

I also have read of similar cases, and there are more of them than you might imagine. In some cases, the deceased is freezer-stored, while in others the body is kept out to naturally decompose and perhaps mummify. The motive is often financial, but it can also stem from unresolved grief or even necrophilia. Sadly, some people who die alone can go undiscovered for varying periods of time; one was discovered after more than a year in front of their TV, the set still on. True nightmare fuel! 🙀

Mummified body found watching TV!

Police discovered the mummified remains of the man, dead for more than a year, sitting in front of a blaring television set.

New York: Police called to a Long Island man's house discovered the mummified remains of the resident, dead for more than a year, sitting in front of a blaring television set.

I remember a news article years ago. It was about a postal worker who lost his job, probably over a down sizing, who kept coming to work. It's must have been a huge post office, and no one knew him, what his job was, or his circumstances. But he would show up, go into his office, and leave at the end of the day. He got paid doing that for years without actually being officially employed, until someone higher up looked into the matter. Not as dramatic as a dead person collecting welfare, but it little more light hearted.

I think I would have gone mad from boredom in that office with nothing to do.
