Hello folks πŸ‘‹Gee I don't use the wifi much. How much do y'all use your computers? 😁

About 4 yrs ago,our apt building got Wi-fi so I could get rid of my HP Windows 7 computer, bought a chrome book instead.A yr ago bought a smartphone which I had never had before.I basically bought it for emergencies then discovered the games I could play
I'm on my laptop 2-3 times a day, ditto with my phone

Recently I read the importance of being prepared for computer crashes.
Being prepared for a computer crash is easy. A 2 gigabyte external hard drive to keep whatever might be important stored & reviewing it routinely makes sense. Of course converting to a SSHD IMO helps with reducing hard drive crashes.

I liked using the old landline phones best. Possibly I will decide to restrict myself from internet use by only using my laptop when I go to a bookstore or coffee shop.

Like the minimal effort needed now to accomplish what took time & effort to manage before.
It seem just the opposite to me. I used to buy DVD's and just turn on the TV, then put the DVD in the player and turn it on -- now I turn on the TV and use three different remote controls and three different post-its to get the DVD going. I gave up on all that today, after about 20 minutes of effort, and decided to just stick it in the computer slot like I used to do. It didn't work, My husband came home and said that now you have to use a special app on the computer to do that. To me, everything is getting much more complicated. Wi-Fi? don't know what that is.

Not sure I understand the question, but not everyone who connects to the Internet uses wifi. We have a cable connection, which is very fast and stable.

I've also disabled the wifi connections in our computers.

That said, I leave my computer on all day, and reboot (shut down and start up) on Saturdays. And, I must say, I use my computer a lot. A lot.

Thank you.

I use my wifi with my little chromebook and my iPhone pretty much all day. My SO was using it for her iPad, but it has died, and needs to be replaced. So she uses her iPhone all day. A TV may be on, but is pretty much ignored most of the time.

As an aside, it is always amusing when folks come on here (a social media) to announce they don't use social media....
Buckeye, I think they mean things like Twitter,Tictoc, etc

I’m pathetic, during our power outage yesterday, I missed my google nest hub…..l always seem to be asking it something….since I got them, I use them a lot, rather than googling….and….I was only out of it for 4 hours.
Technology, it runs the world.

Is this site affliated with any of the other social media? I thought this forum would be similar to visiting the shingles forum for example. I never signed into the shingles forum, so I only read what was posted without joining. For that reason, I assumed forums are not necessarily social media. What surprised me, if true, is there is no way to opt out of this forum if there is a desire. I didn't read that until after signing in. If I understand correctly, the only option is not to come back. I haven't heard of a set up like that at a social media site before, so that's why I mention. At the same time, I don't know enough to say.

Is wifi safe, that is the question? When I had it switched on I was able to see a dozen or so other computers' names from the surrounding neighborhood.
I see that too, but they all have passwords. Safe? No, but you can make it so. I use a VPN (protonvpn) and programs like Malwarebytes, CCleaner, Bleachbit, and Sweeper (ubuntu only). I usually use my ubuntu laptop because I think Windows isn't so safe. I use everything except Sweeper on there. Used to use more safety-related programs, but it would be gilding the lily at this point.

I also set firefox to clear my data and history every time I log out. There are other safety features there too. I have Privacy Badger, Adblock Plus, and DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials on my Firefox browser.

My wi-fi is always on. In fact, AT&T just upgraded the fiber optics in our neighborhood and a tech is coming to the house tomorrow to upgrade us. During the height of the Pandemic, when everyone was at home, we tried watching Netflix on our TV and the streaming would get hung up every time. I'm hoping we can now watch it.

I have two laptops... a Dell given to me by my company when I retired and a Macbook Pro for personal use. I spend a couple of hours in the morning on the Dell... checking email, checking finances, doing Wordle and occasionally checking Facebook while I watch TV in my home office. I wrap it up by 11am and close the office door. I then head to the gym or to a Starbucks and I'm on my iPhone doing word puzzles. At night, I'm on my Macbook on SF and Youtube. So, I'd say maybe 6 hours a day on devices.

Ha ha ha hey this webpage is easier than those other social medias at least 😁! Face book was easy to use before they changed it at least. A couple decades aho I was very active with the newsgroups, simpler is better in my opinion these new social medias just don't make tge cut for me πŸ˜‰! My grandson tried teaching me how to use Twitter, Face book, Instagram... Too complicated !!! Makes me feel like I've gone senile tring to use it! hahahahaha πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜‰ I think my favorite social media is Readdit!

Strange comment.. because people have w-fi related devices ergo they must have no life outside of the internet... ?
Great comment here hollydolly! There are different types of addictions: alcohol, smoking, sex, many different kinds of drugs and I would think that if you are sitting on your butt all day gawking at some electronic device, maybe you have a very serious addiction problem? Yes, there are people who have to use the computer for work but if you are sitting at home and have only the electronic media to baby sit you you are losing out on life. I'm talking here about reasonably healthy people. Some people are house-bound for health issues and the computer is their main communication method with the outside world.

For the healthy ones, you could take a walk outside. It is good for your body and mind. You could visit a friend or take that friend for coffee. How about going to the library and read a good book to stimulate your mind? Maybe volunteer at some place that could use your talents. If you "got the bucks" you could travel, see the world, meet new people, try new foods enjoy life "over there."

I am not against iphone, computers, Roku TV or anything of the electronic gender. Hack, I started learning about Apple computers in 1989, when I think the Berlin Wall fell. However, I use the electronic media to my benefit. I refuse to become addicted. That is why 2 hours on this here "baby" finishes me off nicely.

I have 3 unused "smart phones," but am too dumb to use any of them. My WiFi keeps my TV running 24/7, my Echo Dot, and my laptop. In my youth, I wanted to know everything - but research was hard back then. Now, whatever unknown pops into my head is just a few keystrokes away. I'm on many, many hours a day - and not ashamed!
