Puffins at Bullers of Buchan, Aberdeenshire ...

This pic was taken at 'Bullers of Buchan' location of a sea arch and nesting place of many different seabirds. Odd fact... Their scientific name is Fratercula arctica. 'Puffinus Puffinus' is the Manx Shearwater.

Awesome rock structure! And, admittedly - I could not have described a puffin if I had to, so thanks for the pic!

Wish I wasn't such a chicken. I just need to look into taking a trip over there and see those amazing sights for myself. Maybe a group tour that goes all over. Would want to take a couple of months to be able to stay like a week at a time in different places in the country and seaside.

you wouldn't get to stay a week if you went on a group tour.... You shouldn't be afraid.. we come bearing No Arms... and an American woman on her own would be looked affter wherever you stay.. and remember if and when you get here.. we're here too on the forum.., still here able to guide you, and give you tips of places to visit and the cost, and how to book the cheaper versions , etc, how to get from place to place..... (y)

All you need to do is have an idea where you would like to visit.. sit and choose some places.. and then maybe sometime in the future, you can let us know where you'd like to go and we can work out an itinerary for you..

You are too kind!! I will wait a little longer for things to get better when it comes to travel but I am going to start some research!

I've been watching a documentary filmed in Wales and part of the program was the puffins. I have always been fascinated by these birds, I find their faces so expressive. They mate for life and their babies eat the equivalent of their bodyweight each day . This poor dad went out to find food , returned with a mouth full of fish to feed his young, a seagull was waiting by the nest and because the puffin would not give up his catch the seagull killed him. This upset me so much I am thinking that I have to stop watching these shows.

Great pictures, Capt' L. (y)

'Puffin' masks were all the rage around here during the pandemic. 😊

Yes Timoc, Mrs.L had a puffin mask.
If you have the nerve, you can walk round and over the arch.

One early explorer who walked over the arch was the lexicographer Samuel Johnson in 1773. From his journal ....
We soon turned our eyes to the Buller, or Bouilloir of Buchan, which no man can see with indifference, who has either sense of danger or delight in rarity. It is a rock perpendicularly tubulated, united on one side with a high shore, and on the other rising steep to a great height.

RobinWren.. I'm afraid that's life - Nature red in tooth and claw and not watching it won't alter that. From the seagull's point of view, it was following its own instincts. Seagulls will bully gulls and other birds to steal their food. Magpies will raid nests and take fledglings. From my garden, I've seen hawks take small birds and other live prey. It's a tough life.

I know , the circle of life but it still does not stop the sadness inside. I get worse as I get older, did not used to feel like this watching a documentary. Now they issue warnings before the program starts. It is a tough life, not only for the animal, bird population but also the people that love to watch them.
We visited a sanctuary in Newfoundland that housed thousands of sea birds, it was marvellous to watch them close up, but phew, what a smell. I did not see any person wearing a mask.
