Link to recent arrest in British Columbia of a wanted man from the USA. A RCMP constable worked with the US Marshall's fugitive task force and the Idaho State Police to track down the wanted man, and have him extradited back to the USA. link. Wanted Idaho man arrested by B.C. RCMP after being on the run for 20 years (msn.com) Yes the RCMP do frequently get their man. JimB.

Good for the RCMP! Sounds like a guy who belongs in jail.

When I hear of the RCMP doing something I always envision a Mountie on horseback. Probably not this time...
Yeah the horse and the red serge are iconic images, but the reality is the RCMP is our national Police service and they cover a very wide range of investigative and patrol duties. The Musical Ride is a small 30 person travelling show with horses, that is a recruiting and public relations program.

In terms of the duties that the RCMP does in Canada, they cover the duties that in the USA are performed by the Secret Service, the FBI, the US Marshall's Service, The DEA, the National Parks Police, the US Customs and Immigration service, the ICE, the Fire Arms, Tobacco and Alcohol , the NIA, the US Coast Guard, and the State and local Police in the 50 US States. RCMP officers are also sent to take part in both NATO and United Nations military missions, as criminal investigators, and as trainers for local Police agencies in those foreign countries. RCMP members are also assigned as armed security at certain Canadian Embassies around the world. The Prime Minister of Canada has a RCMP close protection detail who are with him every day as he performs his duties. The current members number around 19,000, with about 11,000 civilian members. A guy is thrown in jail for 38 years, because of "lewd' acts with a kid, and other acts with a kid. Then in only 3 years he's out on parole???? He flees to Canada to evade parole. He's caught and gets to serve 35 years for parole violation. He's in jail for three years for harming a kid, but skips parole, and doesn't hurt anyone, and gets 35 years? I get the idea our prison system is really messed up.

That is a great idea, I have often wondered why we need so many bureaucracies when just one should work just fine. Much more efficient.

AligatorBob. You have to remember that the population of Canada is only 37 million people, so we can afford to have a national Police service who provide a wide range of services. One of the things that I forgot to mention in my original comment is the Canadian Police Information Center, which is our national Police computer information system, which is operated and maintained by the RCMP at their HQ in Ottawa. Every law enforcement service in Canada is connected to CPIC, and so is every uniform patrol Police vehicle in Canada. The mobile data terminals allow an individual Canadian Police officer to search the national data base directly, and to send messages to any other Police service in the country, in real time. The CPIC system was first introduced in 1972, and it is now one of the most comprehensive Police data systems in the world.

One of the more interesting RCMP units is the aviation wing, which flies a number of aircraft types, including turbo prop fixed wing, jet passenger aircraft, helicopters, and drones. Prisoner transfers from one part of the country to another are done with either the turbo props or the jets, depending on the distance involved. In the far north, the aviation wing provides tactical movement of the emergency teams into isolated communities. The drones are used for searches and traffic enforcement in the highway divisions.
