Squalid Living Conditions Of Hong Kong's Poor Population

I spent time in Hong Kong on the Kowloon Peninsula. Place smelled bad as soon as I got out of the plane. It's a different world over there compared to what most of us are used to. Where else do you see prepared ducks hanging in store windows. There are too many people and to few homes because they are land locked and cannot build more high rise apartments where many people live. Families will live together on one apartment. I have heard that as many as 12 people will live in one apt. with other family members. The apartment then gets passed down to their other family members as the previous owners die off. The apartments are very small.

People from the U.S. can get some terrific deal over there. The last I knew the exchange rate was something like $7.50 HK dollars to $1.00 U.S. dollar. Shopping on Locust Street is the best . Great deals on cameras, jewelry and athletic shoes like Nike and Puma are really cheap. Be sure to claim your purchases before going through customs and immigration. And for God's sake, leave the drugs at home, unless you have prescriptions in their drug store bottles. No CBD oil or medical marijuana without it being in the drug store packaging and then only maybe will they let you get by as an American. Drug smuggling is a problem in HK and they use drug sniffing dogs in the airports. HK is known as a place where drugs are funneled through at the airports. Airline workers take bribes to put illegal drugs on planes going to the U.S.

While it is amazing to see this video ...
the cage seems to be their own place........... doubt a space that small you might not want walls for ventilation

in comparison to being on street for example ..............is they have their items and if their cage was locked etc safer then hoping someone takes any possession you have as you go off to work etc.....

and you have you own indoor spot .............not searching for new place to stay as people take your spot.

No-one pays for their spot on the streets.. these poor people are paying $500 a month for a cage... not a cage to sleep in per se.. but a cage as their whole home where they have to do everything the rest of us do in a 3 bed house basically, ... and a share of a kitchen and toilet..

The OP video was posted in 2016. Here's one from last year:

Lots of businesses were shut down and jobs lost after Xi imposed the new nat'l security laws, then covid shut-downs made things worse. Now some of the poor live in "coffin homes" that are about the same size as those cages. Others live on the street.

while looking more posh and such have seen various videos regarding a dorm like atmosphere with a pull out of wall drawer for bed and locker for items....... in a densely populated country .............all other things like bathroom / kitchen etc shared and cost for that rent was a bit higher.

It is awful........ but being on street of having nothing as it is taken from you seems worse to me...........at least with a small space to call your own and some security in that.
many a shelter here does not provide safe place to have basic items and a young person i knew had even his underwear stolen repeatedly ... hard enough to try to scrap together something and get a job if you know all your items will be gone when you get back...
