Lunch Meats

Lunch meats, cold cuts, whatever you call them, I grew up on them. There was liverwurst, pickle loaf and others including salami. I had not had salami in years, so today at the grocery they had some pre-sliced so I bought it. Had a sandwich with it along with fresh rye bread, cheese and a little mustard and I was a kid again .

Do you buy it? Some might not thinking health consciousness, but what the hell.

I do partake once in a while but get mine at the deli counter, fresh cut. I like them for a sandwich but often at pickety bits. A plate with cold cuts, cheese, pickles, olives, raw veggies, crackers, fruit. Perfect for movie night!

I grew up on them too. Usually lunches or a snack.
Sliced ham mostly, also salami, bologna, veal loaf. Sometimes olive loaf. I wouldn't touch mortadella as a child, but love it now.

I haven't eaten liverwurst for many years and about a month ago I tried to buy "Mother Goose" brand and learned it's no longer made. I tried another brand and hated it.

Very occasionally, I buy good packaged salami, prosciutto, or similar, when it's on sale. I read the ingredients and the nutrition info on the label.

I never buy deli meats from behind the counter, because I have no way of telling what fillers or other junk they contain.

I admit though -- I was raised on bologna and other cheap luncheon meats (and processed cheese), and I survived!

This thread reminded me of the inexpensive mock ham salad that used to appear at various functions when I was a kid. It was sometimes referred to as funeral meat because it appeared in sandwiches on many funeral buffets.

It’s also good as a dip with crisp crackers.

Mock Ham Salad
2 lb bologna, hot dogs, Spam, etc…
1/2 c sweet pickles, chopped
1/2 c onion, chopped
6 eggs, boiled
2 c mayonnaise or salad dressing
Directions
1. grind bologna, chopped eggs, and mix. add remaining ingreds., if too stiff add small amt of pickle juice or mayo.

I grew up eating antipasto. We'd always have it on holidays and make it for parties... prosciutto, soppresata or hard salami, capicola, provolone, pastore, or hard asiago, mozzarella, roasted red peppers in olive oil, pepperoncini, marinated olives or green stuffed olives, black olives or oil-cured black olives, marinated artichokes, marcona almonds, breadsticks, and fresh Italian bread brushed with garlic butter and herbs... it was divine. ❤️

An Italian Thanksgiving

These days I rarely eat lunch meat but if I was having a get together I wouldn't hesitate to make an antipasto. People might think it's unhealthy or whatever but they'd still scarf it down! 🙂🙃🙂

I took this appetizer tray to a Christmas dinner. Then it turned out the hostess didn't believe in appetizers and wouldn't let it be passed around before the meal.
What a lovely gesture and perfect appetizer. It looks delicious. How strange that she wouldn't serve it. Maybe she thought the guests would like it better than her meal. 😄 Did she allow it to be served at all? 🤔

It was placed on the table with the turkey, etc. It hardly got touched. I'll know better next time!

I have numerous food issues. To ensure that there will be something I can eat, I always take food to share. In this case, I took the tray home and enjoyed the yumminess myself.

Grew up with..most mentioned..and "summer bologna" (speckle black/white)
But, as HD mentioned.. unhealthy... haven't had/(won't ever have)
..in YEARS!😉

Heck yeah! My mom bought Oscar Meyer hard salami. I saw it on Walmart's website and ordered it. It was so good. I had it on pumpernickel with onions and mustard. Those were the best sandwiches! I remember when I was 11, I ate 5 of them at one sitting.

This goes onto my once a year treat list, along with biscuits and gravy, and fried bologna sandwiches.

I don't each lunch meat, usually. I cook meat and save some for sandwiches.

I can't remember which brand of liverwurst we ate, due to a senior moment. But I know that ever since they stopped making that brand, I've tried others and they are not up to par.

You learn things working on a farm and helping to butcher. I wish everyone had a microscope available so they could look at a piece of their hot dog or lunch meat under the microscope before putting it in their mouth. Nitrites and Nitrates are bad enough and so are MSG’s.

I try not to think about it!

Now I mainly stick to deli sliced baked ham and roast beef occasionally, with the salami and veal loaf or mortadella only rarely.
