Have we gone too casual?

My dad was partners in a factory setting but he was the Front Man, the office guy and wore a suit and tie everyday and looked so handsome. He once showed up early at Open School Day, the first parent in, and when he left some kids were asking who the handsome man was. 🥰 In fact, he was the only father to show up that day.

you must have been so proud....and rightfully so!

There are some instances where a person wearing a suit gives me more confidence in their abilities, such as a lawyer or a real estate agent. I know it's just clothing, but still...
We Brits have an expression for that: "Suited & booted." You do make a good point though, confidence comes from the gravitas presented in appearance. Beware though, the suit and tie is the uniform of the professional, it doesn't mean that they are any better, or in some cases, any good at all.

When I go casual I often wear one of the many Aloha shirts that my wife has made for me.
The fabric of this shirt isn't of an Hawaiian theme, it depicts the golden age of travel.
Using some of the offcuts my wife made the bow tie that I am wearing.
Bow tie, straw hat, striped blazer, that's casual enough for me, thank you very much.

You look very snazzy, Sir!

One good example of when dressing casually is wrong, is what happened when I got married. I married for the second time at age 50, so we didn't want to make a big fuss. We decided to ask two people to the ceremony at city hall, and invited them to a nice lunch at a favorite restaurant afterward. My husband and I wore our nicer things; a suit for him, a pretty dress with pumps for me. One of the guests was my good friend, who was battling cancer, but managed to put on a pretty dress, and she baked a small, 3 tiered wedding cake as a surprise. The second woman was a mutual acquaintance of us both. She showed up in stretch pants, a sloppy blouse, and sneakers with stains on them. I was so embarrassed to have her in my wedding party!

It would have been nice had your friend had bothered a bit more about their appearance at a wedding, albeit a "low key" event, (hopefully you've been able to forgive her).

Oh, it took me awhile to forgive her. Especially after the friend who had baked us a cake, entrusted her to transport the wedding cake in her car, and she let it fall over.  .
Accident prone too then!

My father had a friend or neighbour who was known as being particularly accident prone, though a very nice and well liked or intelligent guy really.
As children my brother and I witnessed him hitting his head on some corrugated iron roof sheeting, at the entrance to my father's "tool shed", where the minimal amount of maintenance we did on the farm was carried out, sharpening "cutterbar blades" for the old grass/hay mowing equipment. Some of this equipment being converted from the days horses were used rather than tractors, including a Massey-Harris mower, (I think designed in the USA for use on the prairie).

What the heck is a onesie for an adult? Is it a one-piece with long pants-type legs and attached slippers? Or a one-piece with the legs cut off at the -well- crotch area?

[Sorry, hollydolly — had to edit my response to clarify]
@Devi I had the same question in my head. The only onesie that I know about is the one for newborn babies, the one with snap-ons in the crotch area.

I don't think she was accident prone, just careless.

You’re nicer than I. I’d call her inconsiderate - or worse.
I have, believe me. I couldn't believe the behavior! We were all supposed to meet at the restaurant after the ceremony, and have lunch. She actually stopped off to run an errand, leaving us sitting around waiting for her so that we could order. When she came in with the disheveled cake, I was speechless. Because of the occasion, I refrained from telling her off. But another couple in the restaurant figured out what was going on, and came over and did it for me! ;)

Yes I think things have gone too casual. Managing a retail business and trying to get Employees to dress appropriately for work is just insane. They all show too much skin. If a t shirt or uniform I’d provided they wear it too tight, always pushing the limit. I’m just amazed by the amount of ladies that don’t mind what is showing, during work. I will confess I went to Family Dollar the other night with pj pants and croc shoes and winter coat on. I felt horrible the whole time lol 😂

I really miss the days when you had a reason to put on your finest things and enjoy seeing others wearing their fine feathers, too. I do prefer comfort over fashion, but it is nice to have an occasion for dressing up once in a while.

Even in church I am seeing this trend of careless, even offensive attire.

Well said, I was thinking about starting a thread about presentation or appearance, then I remembered this thread, although I couldn't remember the title, it took a while.

Out and about, in the sunshine.
What I like about this photo is that my
wife made her dress and my shirt and
trousers. Casual doesn't have to mean scruffy.

No, I really don't care what anybody wears. I've lived in too many places and seen too many variations on what's considered acceptable.
Wonderful:
I am going to wear my zoot suit: Then maybe my brown pin stripe and follow that with the grey double breasted.

Given the weather though, blazers are the order of the day.
Me, peel off to T-Shirt and shorts? Seriously? One does have standards you know.

@horseless carriage With that lovely posture, you'd look great in anything. I'm so jealous!

I was freakishly tall as a child, so I hunched over. I stopped growing at age 11 and am now average height. But still somewhat hunched.
