Auto Thieves have a device that can read your car-key fob

While you sleep, car thieves who have this device can detect and read your key-fob from outside your house, unlock your car doors, and drive off in it. Your even more vulnerable if your car has a push-button starter. Video has prevention tips.

Well that depends if you have electronic ignition. A distributor, like the diagram, has a rotary arm. You can simply unclip the distributor cap and take the rotary arm out. Car ain't going nowhere without the rotary arm.
Car thieves can press their gizmo all night long, it won't do them much good. Not only is the rotary arm missing, so is the technology that they need.

After watching that video, advice noted .... will buy protection for my key fobs ASAP.
They normally stay well over 30 ft. away from my parked car when in my apartment, but it sounds like a good idea anyway.

I'm kind of lazy so I'd rather just drop my key into a can, like the video suggests. :)

Yes it's been a thing here for a while... 2 simple and easy steps to stop them driving off with your car. Keep the keys in a faraday cage.. and put an old fashioned wheel lock on the steering wheel
What old-fashioned lock do you mean? They've figured out the one we call The Club.

The video said keeping your keys in a tin can makes the fob undetectable. Pretty simple. I sent my sons that video, them and their wives all have new cars with the fob and push-button starter. Grant's wife is into crafts and stuff, so she immediately set to work and painted a can with her favorite animal all over it...bats.

Liam's wife probly said "Ooh! Here's an empty can of green beans." (...she's really pretty 😂)

an ordinary empty can won't do because it has to be taped, and if it's taped and untaped it will be useless... ... it needs to be a faraday cage..or fob, or box... ..

This is an old fashioned steering lock.. simply fitted in seconds, and prevents the car being steered.. there are several types..

I think the guy in the video I posted said "tin can" but either one of us could be wrong.

I'll watch yours. I don't need to worry about it but my kids do. Me and the Missus's cars aren't very appealing.

thanks!

Duh, so why isn't there an on/off switch on the key ? Simple, no signal no avenue for thieves. Thanks manufacturers for not thinkin of that one. Lets have the key emit the signal only when the car is needed by the owner. Duh ?

It's just something no one anticipated. Fob key manufacturers are urging people to take their fobs to a dealership for a security upgrade.
