113 Days since my last smoke... BUT...

I stopped years ago and did gain some unwanted weight. I took to walking 10,000 steps per day, both inside and outside. If I did not make it by nighttime, I walked laps around the living room until I did. I lost the 25 lbs I had gained in 6 months, and never put it back on.

To curb cravings for a cigarette, I did deep breathing. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for 2-3 seconds and breathe out through pursed lips. Repeat as many times as needed until the craving is gone.
I used sugar free Halls cough drops. Strong flavored enough to help fight BOTH cravings. And helps stop the weight gain.

Cough drops, walking, and deep breaths might be the magic pill. I've also heard that protein could reduce sugar cravings. I'm sure someone knows more about that than I do.
Hang in there. You can get by this.

I quit smoking over 30 years ago. I too am a type 2 diabetic. When I quit, I went 'cold turkey' and it was a struggle. But, I knew I would make it after a few weeks, when I went into a bar with a friend and had a few beers...I made it through that day and was able to resist smoking, dipping, or chewing. I finally thought, I can do this! Yes I put on weight, but later I learned some things about eating as a diabetic.

What I learned is that when you cut carbs, guess what, you get hungry, real hungry. And when you quit smoking the same thing happens you crave food, 'carb-y food'! Fact is you have to cut carbs to stay healthy as a diabetic, if you don't you will have complications...it is just a matter of time. When you cut carbs you will lose weight, and lose it fast. But you will be crazy hungry, craving all kinds of bad carb rich food.

What is really happening is you are starving your body of fuel, it is used to carbs. The trick I learned is you have to replace the low carbs with fat! Yep, you have to eat high fat foods, you know, bacon, ham, steaks, hamburger, eggs, avocado's, Heavy Whipping Cream (HWC-is both low carb and high fat), Salads with Blue Cheese dressing (also low carb, high fat if you get the good stuff). Fat does not make you fat! That's the magic! Do your own research, they now know that the old "don't eat fat or you get fat crap" is just that, crap! It is just not true. Replace your low carbs with fat and you will not crave after a few days (2-3)! Is their a downside, some will say yes! I say no!

Eating any form of animal fat can cause you 'bad' cholesterol to go up. What I found out is as a diabetic who is eating low carbs, replacing that with fat foods, my cholesterol is stable and did not go up. I have low cholesterol and I get it checked once a year.

Oh and you want a snack, how about some fried pork rinds, dipped in Salsa (low carb of course)! Salty, crunch, goodness high in fat with very low carbs. Other good options, eat walnuts or pecans, even Spanish Peanuts and good snacks that are high fat low carbs. When you crave, eat..and you will lose weight and stop craving. I lost over 50 lbs, 17 the first month. My A1c was at 6.8 on average during this effort. I ate all I wanted, stopped craving...it was a life saver for me. I have never touched another smoke or any other type of tobacco.

One book that is good to help answer questions it Blood Sugar 101 What they don't tell you about Diabetes, by Jenny Ruhl Check it out!

Good luck, quitting smoking is the most important health thing you can do. It is also the most difficult....My Mom, Dad, Sister, Grandfathers, Grandmothers, and two Cousins all died before turning 70 and where smokers! I quit smoking at 34 and I am going on 73, and other than diabetes, I am in excellent health. All my relatives died of Heart Attacks or Emphysema... Stay the Course --

Yes, today is 113 days since my last smoke... (May 16)... But now almost 30 pounds heavier... Being diabetic... I should NOT be eating the things I am eating LOTS of, such as carrot, and pumpkin muffins Oatmeal raisin cookies, Shoe String licorice. Then my sugar rises to numbers where in no way it should be... Then I am exhausted cuz my sugar is very high... I then get everything straightened out and feel better. Then a day or two goes by, and I get a withdrawal, and not from smokes, but from sugar... It's driving me crazy...

Just say NO to licorice @mike4lorie .... https://health.clevelandclinic.org/how-black-licorice-can-make-your-heart-jump/

You are headed for better life! Getting away from another substance you love- sweets, will be another challenge you can win. From there, losing weight will greatly help you diabetes.
You can rebuild your body and your life, it takes time but you can do it! head_bang.gif

I'll tell you my experience for what it's worth. I finally quit on July 26, 1995. My last cigarette was at 12:30 pm. Yes, I do remember it. It was absolutely the hardest thing I have ever done. Living hell for me and more so for those around me. I also gain about 75 lbs. I want to warn you that it is possible you aren't past the worst of it. I know people who still reached for a pack in their pocket well after 20 years of non smoking. I know I'd dream about it for the first 10 years for sure, but haven't in a long time.

I too quit several times. The longest previous was in '79 for about 90 days. I was feeling much better, increased lung capacity, everything. Problem was I didn't know what was often a difficult time for many people, and pretty much everyone I knew smoked. It even took on a sexual overtone as I'd see these gorgeous women smoking. That surprised me as I was in a relationship with a non smoker at the time and she was very encouraging.

What I know about diabetes is what my wife( type 2) went through, but she was in the early stages. It's now not a problem and controlled by diet. I tried to help her as much as possible because we had witnessed what some family members went through with diabetic complications and it was just horrific. Horrific is not an overstatement. While I'm talking about her she also quit smoking, but had a much easier time of it than I did. She just stopped during one of her annual bouts with bronchitis. She did carry cigarettes with her for at least 6 months before she'd decided she had quit. She didn't smoke as much as I did, and did have an apparently easier time to quit. Everybody is different.

All I can tell you it's a bitch. I know someone who came home from Viet Nam addicted to smoking heroin. He quit that and drinking later easily enough, but was a smoker when he died.

I only can say don't be surprised if there are still difficult days ahead, but like everyone else here I'm pulling for you.

All the best.

You hit on a big reason quitting is so difficult...
Another option: PixyStix- powdered flavored candy in a paper straw. It really is helpful!!
He said he's diabetic, though, and he's trying to kick the sugar.

@mike4lorie - I just remembered my bro also got hooked on sugar while quitting, and he broke the habit by eating a small bowl of sugar-free ice-cream every evening. He'd lay off sugar all day (and cigs, of course) and the sugar-free ice-cream would be his reward.

But you should ask your doctor for advice about your weight gain and sugar-cravings, if you haven't yet. I bet s/he has lots of suggestions.

Oops, I'm sorry.. I didn't see where he said he's diabetic.

First of all... I want to thank you all for the support... The part of quitting smoking was the easiest part of this time in my life... I am on some pretty strong narcotics for my chronic pain. And I have gone through a few withdrawals from the narcs a few times and found quitting smoking was easy. When I went through some withdrawals and thought of the withdrawal of the smokes, that was easy... But the sugar thing is killing me... Today after my walk with Carl... I got my wife, Lorie to stop at the grocery store, and I came out with 2 boxes of six muffins in each box... One with Carrot muffins, the other with carrot muffins with sugar icing and a box of 24 homemade oatmeal raisin cookies, that will do me till Thursday morning...

Good to know, but not eating the black licorice, but yes to the cherry... But haven't bought a licorice since the first of August... Thank you @Bonnie
@mike4lorie , I applaud your success so far being smoke free! The overeating usually tapers off.

I'm proud of you!
Thank you @RadishRose

I still think the best thing is to quit smoking, we can deal with the weight when things settle down. I would suggest trying to find other sweets that might fill the sugar crave. You sound like me, I love baked goods. I make most of fine at home so I know what is in there. Maybe Mrs Lorie could make up a big batch of cookie dough for the freezer. I have done it with splenda and it was good. I do that, then form it into logs for cutting and cooking. I love oatmeal raisin!!

Congratulations, mike4lorie. Quitting smoking is a bitch. PERIOD,!! So now, the diabetes is kicking in-ain't life grand?? I quit about 20 years ago, so it'll get easier every day. If you're like me, you try to be good with the carbs to keep your A1C down. but then diabetes makes you so extremely hungry, and you eat, and eat, but nothing fills you up. Then your glucose is up. Again, ain't life grand!!!!!!
Keep on trucking.

I say again, if you are dropping your carbs, that will cause craving, and that type of craving you cannot deny! Fix this by replacing the carbs with foods with fat...Bacon, Hamburger, Hard Cheese, Heavy Whipping Cream in you coffee, Fried Pork Rinds, Guacamole Dip (On Pork Rinds)! Eat low carb, high fat meals and snacks and you will drop weight and within a few days all craving will stop! This can be done....check it out.
