Would you care if your neighbor decided to keep a few chickens?

There was a minor to do in my neighborhood. All the lots have to be 1 acre or larger in my area. One of my neighbors decided to keep a few chickens, and built a coop, and a small fenced in pen. He did not get a rooster, so as to not upset the neighbors at 5:30 AM. Well, this caused a huge to do. The question of his chickens went before the town council, and he had to get rid of his chickens. I don't know anything about chickens, but I didn't think his keeping a few for eggs was a big deal. Would you care if your neighbor decided to keep a few chickens?

Our daughter just bought a home that came with chickens. They did NOT want chickens-and they were negotiable in the listing-but they decided to take them as they thought it might help get their offer accepted. As soon as they moved in,they started rehoming the chickens. All that was left was Ricky, the rooster. He couldn`t be caught so he missed the bus to his new home.

One hen had been missing from when they had first had their offer on the home accepted(our daughter had been going there and feeding them every day as the place was vacant and the realtor stopped feeding them) so it was just Ricky. My daughter got very attached to him so they decided to keep him. Then the missing hen(Lucy) showed back up-along with 8 babies. So now they have a yardfull. As soon as it can be determined which are roosters, those will be sent to new homes and any eggs layed will be eaten or done away with.

By the way,the neighbors HATED the chickens and were so glad that they didn`t plan on keeping them, but the fact that they are now content to stay in their yard and not fly over the fences has kept the neighbors from complaining.

It is fine with me, I don't think they make any smell that travels. My mom had 50 chickens when we had 5 acres, but they lived mostly in the chicken yard. We had ducks and geese too.
When I was living in Nebraska, the lots were ten acres. Our chickens had all gotten old and died out but the neighbors got chickens. They were not careful to keep them confined and their chickens would wander around in the horse corral and come over to look for fallen seeds under my bird feeder. I loved to see them but worried that a predator might get them.

Keeping chickens is illegal in my city.
Yeah, some HOAs strictly enforce No Chickens, No clothes lines, No gardens, and several other Nos

I don't see ever me living an HOA situation

Heh, a neighbor up the way has a rooster
It crows any time of day, all day
Pretty funny, since we're aways outa earshot
But.....his next door neighbor can't too pleased, especially if he's not retired.

Had neighbors, two houses down from me in my old neighborhood with chickens... never knew it until we were in conversation one day about backyard animals.
Surprised me, as I'm not sure it was allowed by our HOA, but it never bothered me.
... especially since I didn't even know about it until they told me. :ROFLMAO:

Like many laws, the local chicken law is only enforced after a complaint is made.

Sadly too many people rush into these things without proper thought and preparation.

I feel just as bad for the chickens as I do for the neighbors.

My mother had pet chickens in a regular house in town in the 80's. They were taken care of. No one complained.

I think they are very calming to watch. When I had that house, I wished to have some but no animals would have been safe outside with those neighbors I had. They threw junk in my bird bath.

Especially on larger lots, I don't see the problem but people have their opinions. I guess they just want their chicken to eat and don't worry about those conditions since it 'not in my neighborhood.'

Edit to add: There is a rooster across the gulch of my workplace. I hear it some mornings. I guess the neighbors over there put up with it. Those are older houses over there and not the considered the best area.

It’s permitted here and these are city size lots. I’d hate it, fortunately I live in an HOA, knock on wood. I suppose someone could test the rules.

My neighbors on both sides DID have chickens! with roosters! Fine with me!
The chickens often got loose and ran free through my yard. I thought it was kinda cool!
Glad I live in a place where the"town council" doesn't inhibit people to live free.
