Unless race was a contributing factor to these shootings, I think mentioning the race of either man was unnecessary and can only stir up trouble. I suspect the reason for mentioning it at all was that this was supposed to be an "answer" of some sort to the outrage about all the shootings of black people by white cops. Like one nut case running around shooting people is enough to make up for centuries of lynching, shooting, torture, etc. by whites against blacks. ("See? The Blacks aren't such angels either.")
3198 white people were killed by the police last year.

Regarding where this event took place, I heard that he was on his lunch break in a restaurant, the shooter came up behind him and shot him, tried to take his gun from the holster which apparently is very difficult to do. Left went to a garage and shot others, one more person dead. At no time was his race or reason for the shooter to commit this act mentioned.
So now, who do I believe? As I mentioned in another thread the media sometimes manipulate the narrative.
In Victoria a short while ago three policemen were shot by two young brothers. Vancouver seems to have these events weekly if not more.

My heart and condolences goes out to the family of the murdered constable. It also goes out to my brothers and sisters in uniform north of the border for their loss...stay safe.

My condolences to the families of the other victims as well and a fast recovery to those injured.

A similar attack on two police officers occurred in a restaurant in Las Vegas:
