Ramsey Lewis died Monday at 87. Now, you might ask who, in the world, was Ramsey Lewis. Well, if you are like me and love those wonderful instrumental recordings by bands such as James Last, Roberto Delgado, Lawrence Welk, Guy Lombardo and others, you might have heard of Ramsey Lewis.

Ramsey Lewis was a jazz pianist and composer. In the 1960s, he recorded some very memorable instrumentals. May I remind you: The "In" Crowd, Hang on Sloopy and Wade in the Water. He is gone but for me, not forgotten. So all you "kool cats" out there will "dig" the sound. Right on! If you don't "dig the jive, you ain't kool." Sorry!

I was surprised to see about his passing on World News Tonight. I was very into Ramsey Lewis in the mid 60s after hearing The In Crowd. I bought the album with the same title (fantastic production) and a couple more. I had the pleasure of seeing him with Earth Wind and Fire at a concert in the park where they performed Sun Goddess. I had forgotten about Sun Goddess. That was an awesome collaboration.

Another jazz piano great, Chick Corea, died earlier this year.

I bought that same album and later converted it from vinyl to digital.
In terms of "Cool" music, he is right at the top of the heap.

I started listening to Ramsey Lewis' music in high school. Many youthful memories indeed. RIP, sir.

It definitely was awesome JB. I love it when Jazz artists collaborate with artists who perform other genres. Miles Davis was another one who was good for that.

When you've gotta go, that's the best way to die. My mother always said she wanted to die in her sleep and she did. My DIL died in her sleep too...but way too soon!

I was a kid back then, but I did listen to his music. I hear his music even today on a classic jazz channel. I like most all genres.

I loved the original version by "The McCoys." Actually, I never heard Ramsey Lewis' version. I don't know why because it's very well done. Maybe I was chasing girls at the time this was recorded? I checked and it was recorded in 1965. In 1965 I was 19 years old and really into "chicks" and I'm not talking about the hen house (in case your wondering).
