Being 'forced' to use self check out

Local (Southern California) retailers have begun trying to force customers to use self checkout stations by not providing human cashiers. In a store last week, realized no cashiers available, put my items down and walked out. Guess we know where I stand on the issue. It should be interesting, can't wait to see how the dust settles on this one. I guess the choice is self checkout or online shopping :coffee:. Don...
 

Is customer service gone now?
"We want your money but we clearly don't want to deal with you."
They show up, put in their hours do the minimum of work they can get away with.
To smile, to say hello, to answer a question is, well, They don't get paid enough.
It's a strange way to do business. Don't ya think?

I've not seen that, everywhere I shop there are both human cashiers and self-serve. I just used a self-serve checkout at Right Aid 1/2 hour ago, got checked out and out the door quickly.
 

The regular registers are closed after 8:00 pm at most grocery stores around here. On the few occasions I've had to use self check out, there's been a problem. I've asked for help from the employee who's stationed there and been told, "In a minute." So I stand there and stand there while the person laughs and jokes around with another employee. I've left my groceries and walked out more than once. F*ck it. Unless I'm desperate for something from the store after 8:00 pm, I'll just wait until the next morning to get it.
 
Oh dear! :cool: I refuse to go to a human checkout. It's far easier and more convenient to use self checkout. Only supermarket I continue to use a cashier is at Aldi because they don't have self-checkout, YET. At a supermarket in Halifax, Nova Scotia two weeks ago, I opt for the self checkout. Same in Sydney and Auckland back in 2019.
 
I try to constantly decide if… have a rude, unknowable person that could care less check me out or…argue with a machine that could care less check me out.
The nice thing about shopping for groceries in a small town where you have shopped for 30 years is you know the cashiers and which one NOT to use. That, and you can threaten to tell their mom.
 
Same is here where I live. Grocery stores make more with less cashiers and the shareholders make more money. The word here is that there are mistakes when people do not check all their items through the register. But this is Ok for what is paid for cashiers is higher than the losses through these accidents or theft. Can we possibly be on the way to becoming an honor-based society?

So those stores can fire more checkers.
Walmart here has a large area of self checkout, they tried to force us to use it by having one or two clerks on tills. But oh no they weren't going to let anyone go.........that was a lie!
 
I grocery shop a few times a week for a few items, since I have nothing but time these days. If I only have a few items I will use self check-out. I prefer it. I don't need someone in front of me who is writing a check or questioning the price of something or whether their coupon is valid. However, when I buy wine I either have to go to a cashier or make sure there is someone at self check-out who can override the "age" thing.

We went through a dry spell of grocery cashiers in Dallas, but I've noticed we now have plenty.
 
I didn't like self-checkout at the Baker's (Kroger) in Nebraska because it is hard on my back to bag my items - the spot right next to the scanner I can use okay, but the upper bag shelf spots I can't reach without hurting my back, and the second spot over is a hassle to keep stepping sideways, and if I move the full bag into the cart so I can keep using the spot next to the scanner, the machine gets upset, tells me to put it back, and calls the helper.
The only time I don't mind using self-checkout is if I only have a few items.
 
Don't mind Walmart's self-checkout, but other stores don't maintain their machines or keep adding apps to enhance the checkout experience. I may as well wait in line. There's one won't take my debit card as payment because I'm not lightning fast entering my PIN. Another one asks several questions before I can start running my stuff through then more questions before I can pay. It's idiotic having to press no thank you over and over. People who are supposed to be there to help are rude. Stupid sappy voice confirming every scan is also irritating. Stores want people to use their machines they need to streamline to purchase input only and just let you pay. I scared myself last time when I glanced at the ungodly image of me on that security monitor too. Eek! Turn it off!
 
Canadians are used to dealing with machines.

And we're so polite, we say 'thank you' to the ATM's when our transaction is complete.
i don't deal well with the scanners when they tell me there's something that doesn't belong in bagging area... or tries to tell me i have to put something back. i also know i'm not the only one who talks to those computers.
