Dogs that fatally mauled Tennessee toddlers, injured mom were never violent, friend says

The family's pit bulls killed Lilly Jane Bennard, 2, and her little brother, 5-month-old Hollace Dean Bennard.

The family dogs who mauled two Tennessee toddlers to death Wednesday and left their mother with severe injuries had never been aggressive, a friend told Fox News Digital.

Kirstie Jane Bennard, 30, was seriously wounded when she tried to pull the family's two pit bulls off 5-month-old Hollace Dean and 2-year-old Lilly Jane at their home in rural Shelby County outside Memphis.

I don't understand why people have this breed when there are so many other proven gentle breeds. How sad for this family.
From conversations with their owners, I think many choose Pit Bulls to prove their's is different. And some want to prove their reputation is unwarranted.

DH & I taught our children to keep their faces away from animals' faces. No dog or other animal is 100% trustworthy or predictable 100% of the time. Not to mention that it's pretty gross to see humans practically French kissing their dogs. Yuk

People take a huge risk when they own dogs they can neither physically dominate nor control in an emergency. One adult supervising two babies and two large dogs of any kind, never mind pit bulls, is a recipe for potential disaster.

Most home insurance companies specifically exclude pit bulls and pit mixes from liability coverage because they've had to pay out too many times. Public shelters are LOADED with pits because so many are given up by previous owners and are then shunned by most who are in the market to adopt a dog.

When I first read about the Tennessee attack a few days ago, I said to my husband, "Oh no, did you hear about the family dogs that killed an infant and a toddler and put their mom in the hospital?" First thing he said was, "Pit bulls?"

There must be more to this story that just hasn't been made public yet. Those dogs must have been triggered somehow to attack both small children to the extent of not only harming them, but killing them. Let's wait for more to follow.

That's what I'm thinking. Many dogs especially females like and are protective of children. The dogs or kids did something wrong or the owner missed in training or teaching.

You think that five month old infant started it?

Sure the dogs were triggered, they were triggered by having Pit-bull brains, unpredictable brains that were bred to suddenly turn vicious and win dog fights.

Pits are responsible for 65% of all dog caused fatalities. They aren't any more likely to be mistreated or poorly trained than any other breed, yet they're far, far more likely to kill humans.

I no longer have much pity for the parents in cases like this, their children died for their parent's hubris. The owners were so sure they knew more about dogs and more about training than everyone else, they were willing to risk their children's lives to prove a point.

No, I didn't mean that at all. I meant that perhaps the mother triggered the dogs.....for whatever reason. Or, something startled the dogs that gave them a signal to attack.
As I said earlier, there is more to the story, and currently there is only silence on the case. Just wait...the reason will be made known.

Any dog that can be "triggered" by a "wrong" move or a "wrong" act or a "wrong" tone of voice is a really stupid choice for a pet; especially around children.

What might be a justifiable trigger?

And the penalty for that should be death?

It's hard to believe that you suggest there's any justification whatsoever for two family dogs killing their family member - two babies - and putting the mother into critical condition.

Couldn't agree more, Win.

Nowhere have I suggested any justification for this horrendous action of the dogs. I don't know where you get this. I did say there is more to the story, and it will come out.
That being said, I personally dislike pit bulls or any aggressive breeds.

Please accept my sincere apology. Apparently I misunderstood your meaning.

So sad. I can't imagine badly how the parents feel. So tragic.
However, never should have children anywhere near pit bulls.

I think at a minimum, there should be a ban on owning more than 1 pit bull. When dogs get in groups, they get much more aggressive and wolf-like. Where I grew up, packs of normally fairly passive dogs would chase and run down deer in the spring time when the snow was crusted enough for dogs but deer had a hard time running. They would catch the deer and then slowly dismember it. As a jogger in the country, I am not too intimidated by a single dog, but when there are two or more, I take caution, regardless of the breed.
