More melancholic or moody songs, such as Fairport Convention's "Who knows where the time goes"

Following the most rewarding thread about fun songs, (a thread I hope keeps running as long as anyone wishes to listen), I thought a thread about more melancholic or moody songs might help create a balance, (who doesn't love a tear jerker! :) ):

"Who knows where the time goes" by Fairport Convention, (another saying my parents, or mother in particular used to repeat often):

September Song” by K. Weill (1938) and sung by Frank Sinatra among others has a melancholy feel to it…

September Song"

[Lengthy Intro:]
When I was a young man courting the girls
I played me a waiting game
If a maid refused me with tossing curls
I'd let the old Earth make a couple of whirls
While I plied her with tears in lieu of pearls
And as time came around she came my way
As time came around, she came

When you meet with the young girls early in the Spring
You court them in song and rhyme
They answer with words and a clover ring
But if you could examine the goods they bring
They have little to offer but the songs they sing
And the plentiful waste of time of day
A plentiful waste of time

Oh, it's a long, long while from May to December
But the days grow short when you reach September
When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame
One hasn't got time for the waiting game

Oh, the days dwindle down to a precious few
September, November
And these few precious days I'll spend with you
These precious days I'll spend with you

I heard this song for the first time on this forum and thought it was very different. It will either make you laugh or make you cry.

Apparently we're not trying hard enough to come up with melancholic songs, (don't ask me how I know!).

Its been suggested Lou Reed did a few good ones, Tracy Chapman I'm told too, to name just two great singers, so its time to shape up here, there's pride at stake! :)
