Correct, prior to the current incumbent's short term of office the previous prime minister to serve the shortest term was George Canning. He held various senior cabinet positions under numerous prime ministers, including two important terms as Foreign Secretary, finally becoming Prime Minister of the United Kingdom for the last 119 days of his life, from April to August 1827.

yes precisely that .. politically neutral.. and yes they have to be seen and to be thought accepting of whatever Party and leader are elected.

Charles is known for being caught out whispering asides about who he despises, so as King he'll definitely have to be careful now..

FWIW I think it will be Rishi - I doubt the Boris rumour but, you never know, these days anything could happen!

Does anyone who is elected and selected by the one majority Party, get the position, with no influence from the other Parties or their members?

Hate to say this. When Truss was chosen, were there any other women running against her? The politically correct thing to do was to chose a woman. There was some negative news about her right away. I hope the party finds someone decent to lead.

I gather the Conservatives have a large majority and can’t be brought down by the opposing parties.

yes Penny Mordaunt was up for the position at the same time ...I really can't talk too much more about the political parties policies for fear of going against the forum political rules.. but no it's not true that the Conservative party can't be brought down by opposing parties..

yes..in a nutshell..yes !! Usually the public get to elect a leader of the party but because Boris left so suddenly a leader had to be found to replace him immediately ..and therefore she was elected by her own party votes.. ..as will be her successor..

In Australia the Labor party elects the parliamentary leader by a vote by the parliamentary party and the wider party. It is weighted towards the parliamentary vote. The conservative parties that form what we call the Coalition still decide their leaders by a vote of the parliamentary party alone.

The leaders can be challenged mid-term when they lose the confidence of the party room but Labor has a newish rule that says a leader who has taken the party to government from opposition cannot be challenged in their first term as PM. This is because the turmoil experienced during the Rudd-Gillard-Rudd years. Two capable leaders were burned to a crisp by that experience and Labor lost the next three elections. The Coalition, especially the junior party, the Nationals, have also disposed of a number of leaders over time but continue with the old rules.
 
So much turmoil at the leadership level. Not only in UK but in so many other countries. What is needed is rock solid leadership. What is found is so often wanting.

Near as I can tell, I'm at the end of a long rope that is getting jerked far too often. All I can do is hang on for dear life. Arnold
 
Trouble with politicians is that no matter how badly they mess up, no matter how incompetent they are or how totally irresponsible they are - they still get a decent pay off. In most jobs, if you mess up, you'd be lucky to get a reference!

Just picture the Australian XI planting a flag at Grenwich and claiming England for Australia as Terra Nullius. It is a scene worthy of the Monty Python team.

LONDON, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is flying back to the UK this weekend, a journalist at the Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on Thursday.

The Times newspaper had reported that Johnson, who is on holiday abroad, was expected to stand in the race to replace Liz Truss who resigned as Prime Minister
