Anybody else ever race cars here?

We don't have as far to go, as we've already been
Drag cars, stock cars, (dirt and paved), sprint cars, SCCA cars... all types of cars, I love talking cars. Way back, I drag raced a little, but, I soon discovered circle track racing was in my blood. Not only that, it turned out the wife was quite a runner herself.
Anyone else? Let's hear about it.
Here's a few of the wife. I'll get to mine later.

I did some drag racing in the late '50's....1956 Ford. I won very few races, but it was fun. When I was in Germany, one of my friends bought an Austin Healy, and we would team up on a few weekends and race it at a local small airport on Sundays. He let me drive it a couple of times. I had dreams about getting involved with NASCAR, but marriage and our first child took precedence.

Ok, I'll go first. In 1965, My drag car (1933 chevy coupe) with a chevy small block turned 11.1 in a quarter mile with a speed of 122.93 mph. Spooky ride with no front brakes and original steering box and axle.
Now, later on in life, I got to ride in a friends new 1966 corvette with the optional L-72 big block engine. Filled the speedometer (160) on the finished but unopened Long Island expressway. As a passenger, all I could think was I hope a wheel bearing doesn't seize up or one of those knock offs don't come loose because they'll be sponging whats left of us into a bucket.

Started in 1971 with a VW mini stock on a 1/3 mile oval. Moved up to a 1934 Chev coupe, with a 250 Chevy inline six, with the Canadian Vintage Modifieds club. Ran the 34 for 6 seasons, then bought a asphalt modified with a 427 big block, running in OSSCAR modified club. Loved the modified for it's amazing traction and handling and speed. In 1992 I sold the modified due to employment changes, but I still got out to the track a few times a year to watch my buddy Gary Elliott. This year in 2022, he was elected to the Canadian Motor Sports Hall Of Fame, for his FIFTY YEARS of racing , with Quaker State Motor Oil as his primary sponsor, through all those years. He is still racing at 76 , and he is still very competitive against 22 year old drivers. here is a link to his website. Gary Elliott Motorsports JimB.

Ever make it to Catamount back then?

No, I live in Ontario, in Canada. The Vintage Modifieds used to do a 3 day holiday trip to Michigan on the Canada Day / 4th of July weekend. Saturday at Klamazoo, Sunday at Spartan Speedway, and Monday at Flat Rock, then tow home. Within a 2 hour drive of Toronto there are 7 tracks now. Due to the weather up here, our seasons are shorter than in the southern States. JImB.

My only trek north was to Autodrome Granby aka Rebel Speedway. What a time I had with my dirt mod there. :D 5/8ths mile and a fast race track.

The Only racing I did was the Quarter Mile at Smithfield, it was fun and we were constantly harassed by the police which led to even more fun escaping them lol.
Could you ( as an Australian ) explain the term Hoon? Does it refer to teen age hooligans ? Thanks. JimB.,

Our family went to Five Mile Point (Binghamton, NY) to the stock car races just about every week. My father loved cars and we owned a gas station so that was a favorite thing to do. Last night was the last night of that race track for good. Closing down. Sad.

Picture of my uncle who raced at Five Mile Point.
