Today at HomeSense I bought Christmas decorations and a large picture for over the Mantle.. exactly what I;ve been looking for , for ages..

The cashier didn't have any tissue to wrap the delicate ornaments up.. so I tried to carry them out to the car, while a male member of staff carried the very heavy Picture.

I spent over £200 .. and just as we stepped out of the door to the car ( about 6 inches).... one of the ornaments knocked against another and smashed to smithereens.. so the guy asks the manager if it can be exchanged.. and it was a flat NO because it happened ''outside the store'' ... , I explained that they were very fragile and that they hadn't been wrapped.. and it was only £7.. and I;d just spent £209.. .. and it was still a NO.. .. so in a fit of Pique, I said..OK.. now for the sake of that £7 and some goodwill, you can have all my £200 plus goods back that I just purchased .. and I took them to the till and had them all refunded.

I was just annoyed at the lack of any kind of goodwill, given that they had no wrapping paper in the first place.. and if it had smashed 6 inches inside the door instead of outside the door and witnessed by the store Sales clerk.. they would have let me exchange.. but .. no.. so I felt that making a stand by returning the goods.. and no further transactions in that store .. I feel they lost more than they bargained for..

I just took myself over to a different store, and except for the painting, I got everything and more there.. for 1/2 the price I;d just paid in HomeSense..

Just irritated about the painting.. but principles and all that, given that I spend anything up to £500 or £600 in that store every year .. what would you have done ?

Home Nonsense!

Good move! I would have done the same thing.

My six pack of beer broke open at the car and smashed to the ground. The clerk gave me a new case no questions asked. I think you ran into an inexperienced customer associate...that or he/she was brainless.

no the associate was fine he tried to get it exchanged it was the Manager who refused..

My dear old Mom back in the day would have paraded outside the store with a placard reading "Home Nonsense!"...then explain to each entering customer what had happened to her. She really would have done something like that...Mom was peppy and unstoppable in her prime.

A store that sells such delicate goods should have tissue to wrap the item.

I always ask that something that delicate gets wrapped.

I am sorry that this happened to you.
funny that you say that about the Tissue. In the second store I went to and where I got the Decorations for 1/2 the Homesense price, I asked in there for the tissue before I even put the stuff on the counter.. and the guy went off and found a whole load.. and I related the story of Homesense to him, and he said that sometimes.. ''depending on the day and the manager ''.. they also can treat people the way Homesense did

..lol. I actually told every single person I chatted to after I left Homesense.. about what had happened..:D

Is there another store nearby? If so, buy the picture you wanted.

Nevermind, I just saw your reply.

It's up to them to wrap fragile items. If they were out of tissue paper, they could have wrapped the decorations in small bags.

Different stores have different policies. Some are "The customer is always right," and others want to save a few cents on tissue paper/bags.

If you don't like their policies, avoid them. (I'm beginning to feel that way about Amazon.) As you discovered, walking away can lead to better things.
