Swim Goggles

Aunt Mavis

I have met the enemy and he is us. Pogo
I’ll never forget getting my first pair, I’d guess it was 1975. Growing up in my small town swimming at the local pool was practically the only thing to do. Amazing to finally see what’s under the water, I even saw a gold fish once! I got the same exhilarating feeling when I tried on my first pair of reading glasses. I hadn’t noticed over time how bad my eyes sucked.

I wouldn’t be afraid to bet anyone that I have at lest 30-40 pairs of swim goggles. Every time I go to somewhere to swim, I have to buy a new pair. I don’t wear the full square type, just the goggles that cover the eyes. Nike, Speedo and TYR are my favorites.

Never wore goggles, but we used to go snorkeling with a face mask. I got the notion to grow a mustache and the mask leaked. I never grew another mustache.

We really enjoyed snorkeling on the Barrier reef, something to enjoy reminiscing about as we age.

Masks or snorkels were never allowed at the pool unless it was training of some sort. Goggles changed everything.

Never had a pair on, lots of time with mask and snorkel though.

Always preferred natural water bodies to pools.

I learned how to keep the leakage to a minimum. Lots of time with masks over the mustache.

Cause and effect: The boys gathered over near the high dive goggles ready. They coordinated their dive with the girls jumping off. I knew that was a recipe to get kicked out or parents called so I stayed far away. Swimming meant more to me than girls until later. Lol.

The other question. Why did Pops always say “Got yer jockstrap boy?” Nobody wore a jockstrap swimming that I knew of. I tried to tell him that and he’d reply “of course they do!” Must have been a thing in the 40’s and 50’s.

I could never see anything snorkeling because I needed glasses and the prescription snorkel masks were too expensive.

So I took the stems off an old pair of my prescription glasses and found a mask that I could jam the glasses into. It looked rather dorky but I could at last see the pretty fishes.

No problem now, though, after I had cataract surgery and can see without glasses.

I love snorkeling.
