Ignore the cynics – Britain has become the greatest melting pot in the world

When King Charles III is crowned next May, a Hindu Prime Minister will leave 10 Downing Street with his Indian wife to attend the ceremony. The Muslim Mayor of London will already be at Westminster Abbey. Security will be headed up by the Home Secretary, a Buddhist. The only white holder of a great office of state, Jeremy Hunt, will arrive with his Chinese wife. And the Chief Rabbi will walk from Clarence House, having stayed the night as the guest of the King and Queen Consort. It will be a perfect scene of modern Britain.

Crap!

They've been the greatest despots, though that's the English rather than the British, but the Romans were the greatest civilisers and spreaders of culture they have ever been.

Romans were greatest civilisers!! I don't call feeding the Christians to the lions civilised.
A matter of taste, I guess. I'm JOKING!

An efficient sewer system, planned farming, grain storage, a basic welfare system, an alphabet, schools, an organized system of government... all quite civilized. And just as with modern civilizations, greed and extravagance among the elite can ruin it for certain sectors.

All of them and then some attended the queen's funeral, too.

But, yeah, some Brits aren't so happy with the expansion of culture and ....well, too many people.

The Roman Empire fell because they refused to recognize the signs of the times. Things were changing and they could no longer enslave their own citizens successfully. People don't care much about the quality of drains and roads if they are oppressed and starving.

  • It was perfectly civilised by the standards of the time.

  • At that time the British were still running around daubed in blue paint while Iranians writing poetry and decorating beautiful buildings with beautiful art

Worth remembering Laurie, that while the Sassenachs rolled over, the Celts scared the crap out of The Romans. Hadrian's Wall still stands as testament to that.

While I live here I am not in fact a Scott.

My country was overrun by the Romans. I was brought up within a few miles of a large Roman Fort.
