UTI and swimming pool?

It took me a long time to get my free pool pass. I was planning to go to the pool for the first time yesterday, but didn't because of weather.

Then I just happened to find out that urinary tract infections (UTIs) can cause big problems for older women. No only physical, but also mental, e.g., hallucinations or violent behavior. Reasons for the latter are not understood.

Apparently UTIs can be prevented or lessened by thorough washing after using the pool. Our local pool is underused, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's clean. Maybe they clean it less often; I don't know.

I sure don't want to get sick, physically or otherwise. Any experiences or insights? Thank you.

I was a year round lap swimmer in public & club pools wherever I was living & in vacations until I broke my leg 5 years ago & couldn’t do the ladders any more even after it healed. I never got a UTI from swimming. I always did check on the cleaning, testing practices etc. & if they didn’t seem to pass my standards I didn’t use them. And showered after.
I’d suggest finding out about their cleaning, testing standards and what chemicals are used. Or if you know any other women who use the pool?
it seems like some women are just susceptible to UTI in spite of good personal care & cleanliness. If you haven’t been, I don’t think it would be likely. Oe see what your Dr or Gyn thinks about it? I never heard of UTI causing hallucinations or violence.
( I did get one once from swimming in a pond near a friend’s farm. Hadn’t known there were cows upstream….)

UTIs are painful and dangerous so for me, I don't go near swimming pools.
Thank you, this is one of the sites I visited today.

For 10 (recent) years, I lived on a property that had a hot tub I could use for free any time. I never went in it, because of possible bacteria and also the chemicals that might make me susceptible to infection.

Hmm. Now I'm wondering why I thought the pool would be a good idea.

I avoid pools mostly because of the chlorine. I know it is necessary to prevent spread of things like UTI, but I don't like it. If you can tolerate the chlorine and your pool is well maintained you are probably ok. Well maintained means more chlorine than I can tolerate. Always a good idea to shower or bathe after getting out.

UTIs are strange things, my father got one at age about 85, and it did make him more or less crazy. I don't understand that connection, but it does happen...

Be careful out there!

I've stayed out of any public pool since getting eye & ear infections as a child.
If it's not your pool, you have no way of knowing how it's maintained. Or what other swimmers do in the water.
They pee in the water 😂, and other stuff.

Note from the apartment management-incontinent people please remember to wear a diaper in the pool. 😳.

Note to self-throw your swimming suit away.

Strangely enough the problem with hot tubs is sitting on the side of them, that’s where the bacteria is. In addition, hot tubs are not recommended for the elderly for a variety of health reasons; because, well, they are hot.

Yes, a youngish friend asked me why I haven't been in a sauna for decades. I couldn't think of an answer. I also couldn't imagine being in one again.
