Change in your country

So, I'm curious, Liberty. Where did you get the idea that we have stopped laughing? Isn't that what they call a "straw man" argument? Setting up a false statement in order to make some kind of point, but the original statement has no merit?

Or if your life is as sad as all that, I suggest that you find some new friends!
Totally uncalled for!!

Basically we need to cast aside all this current left-wing ideology and get back to common sense and decency. It's hard to believe that so many people are going along with this, especially those in positions of power.
We need to remember that this is Great Britain. We once had an Empire, and have had enormous influence on the rest of the world. Why are we allowing ourselves to be brought down by a handful of pathetic fantasists?

I often wish we had emigrated years ago. Mrs. L says that every country has it's problems, but I say they can't be any worse than the UK's.
If I was young again, I'd definitely go, but it's too late now . The UK has become the trash can of the world and it's time somebody did some "spring cleaning".

Huh? We need to cast aside all this current radicalism of any stripe. Left, right, religious, political. Common sense and decency aren't limited to any one "ideology".

Perhaps you should read Viktor E Frankl's books about his time in the camps.
Don't speak of reading one book and thinking you know. Over 80% of the adults I grew up with had nazi tattoos. Thousands of people had their own stories to tell, and they don't all match Frankl's story, no matter how 'triumphant' this particular author's story was. He didn't speak for all survivors and you don't speak for any.

You do not know my history....

For heaven's sake! No do I wish to. Whatever happened to "general light-hearted discussions"?

How about we stop the bickering? Nobody has to agree with everything. And it's really not necessary to reply unpleasantly.

Kind of interesting, actually. I've been on and off SF since 2019. It has become much more political and much more contentious in that time. I should know, I'm one of the worst offenders.

Where would you go? Your missus is right in that every country has problems. The ones that seem idyllic (Switzerland?) well, either you can't get in or it's too expensive to live there.

I agree. People have turned just plain mean and petty. Not me, of course; I'm a paragon of virtue :ROFLMAO:

Is the limit on political contributions actually enforced in Canada with any success? If something like that were legislated here, people would be trying to figure out how to get around it within milliseconds.
Yes it is. And it is a national law. In order to be a Federal candidate, the individual must have the endorsement of their local party membership in that ryding. The candidate needs to raise funds through their own efforts, and the local party membership also contributes. A typical cost for a Federal hopeful to run their local campaign is around $50,000. The national party HQ allots funds for national advertising, on all types of media for their party.

In Canada, the party leaders are already in place and well known when a national election is called. We don't have set dates for national elections here. Usually the time between national elections is 4 to 5 years. The timing of our election campaigns is 40 to 60 days from the date the election is called, until voting day. Canada maintains a permanent Voter's List, that is updated every year. When a Canadian files their tax return to Revenue Canada, their home address is automatically sent to Elections Canada, and cross checked against the List. So if you move, it is reflected in the List.

Before an election Election Canada sends a Voter's Card to all citizens by mail, 3 weeks before the vote takes place. Advance polling takes place in the week before Voting Day which is always on a Monday. Ballots are simple. One page, with the names of those running in that ryding, with NO party identification, Voters are expected to know who is running and what party they represent. Make an X next to your choice, put it in the box and leave. Because polls are open for 10 hours each day during the advance voting period, it is very unusual to have to wait more than 5 minutes, to vote.

Provincial and municipal elections are run on similar rules. Each of our ten Provinces and 3 Territories have their own Election boards that run the process. My Wife and I both have been employed during both Provincial and city lections here in Toronto.

To answer you question about how election contributions are accounted for. Each individual candidate, and their local ryding association must submit a financial report to the Election Board, with in 24 days of the vote being held. Those reports are subject to audit by the Election Board, and by Revenue Canada, for accuracy and verification.

Our Federal Parliament has 341 Members Of Parliament. Each of then represents a ryding somewhere in Canada. The party which elects the most MP"s forms the Government. The leader of that majority party becomes the Prime Minister, and she/he selects the Cabinet Ministers. Note that in Canada the Prime Minister runs in a ryding, and must win that ryding to become a MP so they are directly elected by voters. Each of the Cabinet Ministers were also elected by the voters in their ryding. The opposition parties form the Loyal Opposition, and in order of the number of MPs they have they are ranked, First, Second, Third , and so on. At this time we have 6 parties in the Federal Parliament, with the Liberals having a minority position, because they did not win a majority of the 341 seats, This means that in order to be able to pass new legislation they MUST co-operate with one of the opposition parties, to get a bill passed. In this case the New Democratic Party had been the one that has supported the Liberals. The NDP is a left center party.

If you have further questions I will be happy to write more. I have never run for office, but I am a long time observer of our political scene. JimB.

Covid was the straw that broke the camel's back, but it's been festering for years between those wanting to push forward and those wanting to push backwards. I think it started decades ago because of Vietnam and Roe, at least for Americans.

Sorry, Liberty, I like a good laugh as much as the next one. But I fail to see anything funny about overthrowing our beautiful, powerful, sacred democracy, in favor of what? Fascism? Blind hero worship? Is it funny that a nut case sneaks into the home of a dedicated legislator, who has been working her butt off for this country for umpteen years, and beats her 82-year-old husband over the head with a hammer? Oh yes, that's a real belly laugh!

Some things are decidedly not funny.
Read what I said...didn't say anything about making jokes about the bad things happening now did I, but surely there must also be funny things to laugh at now days. Just look in the mirror and I can find something to laugh about. Bring back the belly laugh!

It's good... probably not the correct term... to hear the folks from Great Britain chime in. Here in the U.S., we get wrapped up in our current political clime and the attempt to defeat democracy. We don't open our ears and hear people across the globe seemingly dealing with their own set of issues... and realize we are not alone.

We've lost respect for our fellow man. How do we regain the ability to regain that?

We've become global melting pots. Some immigrating for safety. Some for work. Some for medical care. Some for grift. Some for crime. How can we accept those who will make our countries stronger? How can we deny those who have bad intentions?

We, at least here in the U.S., have evolved to a justice system based on celebrity and dollars. People are in prison for possessing a small amount of marijuana while those who would overturn our government are walking free. Can we ever return to equal justice for all?

We, at least here in the U.S., are dealing with an extremely strong move to marry a specific religion with government. That is what brought our founders here to get away from. Can we ever return to being free to believe what we want, but not be free to force that belief on others?

Technology is awesome!! We can talk to people around the world with this little device in our pocket. We benefit from modern medical miracles through technology. Yet, that technology includes an internet full of falsehoods, grift, etc. Can we ever see some means of sorting out truth from trash?

Life is good. People are good. We just have to find out some means of being kinder and hope that evolves to less hate in society.

Ask any comedian now days - they will tell you its hard to make a joke. Its like everyone is so critical of absolutely anything. I can't even say bring back the belly laugh without being attacked. That's exactly what I mean. My friends and family laugh and we do talk about the lack of good universal laughter.
