Hand Sanitizers and Gel Sprays used during the Pandemic May be Carcinogenic

Nearly two dozen hand sanitizer brands have been recalled or banned in the US after they were found to contain a cancer-causing chemical.

Thousands of bottles made in China, South Korea and in America were pulled from shelves between April 2021 and September this year.

The gels and sprays — which became a mainstay during the Covid outbreak — were found to contain dangerous levels of benzene, a carcinogen at the very top of the Government's most dangerous solvent list.

It comes after more than a million bottles of dry shampoo were recalled last month over benzene contamination fears.

In total 21 brands of hand sanitizer have been recalled including products made by The Creme Shop and Ulta Beauty, plus lesser-known sanitizers sold in TJ Maxx, Marshalls and online.

Some of the products appear to have been targeted at children with packaging including Star Wars' character Yoda, Disney figures and Spiderman.

When rubbed onto the hands, even in relatively small doses, benzene can seep through the skin and into the blood stream where it can stop cells working correctly. It is known to cause leukemia and other blood disorders.

The recalls were for specific batches of products, with many ending up back on shelves after the contamination issue was addressed.

Some foreign-made products have been banned completely, however, after failing to comply with the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) request for a recall.

The below hand sanitizers have been recalled by the FDA or had an import ban put in place due to benzene contamination. The list is published on the agency's website:
  • Hand sanitizer isopropyl alcohol antiseptic 75% topical solution, made by Bluebonnet Petrochemical Solutions;

  • CALA advanced hand sanitizer with aloe vera extract, made by David Cosmetic Co. Ltd.
  • The Creme Shop's moisturizing hand sanitizers with various scents, made by Mirfeel Korea Co.

Many of the hand sanitizers were found to contain more than the interim legal limit of two parts per million (ppm) of benzene which was in place during the pandemic to help ramp up production in 2020.

Others were recalled after containing much lower levels when the limit was brought back down to zero in 2022.

Benzene may inadvertently end up in hand sanitizers during the manufacturing process when the gels are treated to remove impurities.

Purification is done using a chemical made with benzene, which can sometimes still contain trace amounts of the carcinogen.

Benzene is a cancer-causing chemical, also known as a carcinogen, that is widely used in manufacturing in the US.

It is used in the creation of plastic, nylon, rubbers, paint and glue products.

It can also be found in tobacco smoke, motor vehicle exhaust and industrial emissions.

Long-term exposure to the chemical has been linked to severe damage to a person's blood.

In has been linked to blood cancers like leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

The chemical has also been linked to anemia.

The scale of the health impact of benzene-contaminated hand sanitizers in the US is yet to be fully understood — but there have been no reported injuries so far.

When Covid first emerged, the FDA relaxed rules governing hand sanitizers allowing un-regulated manufacturers to make them providing they followed a certain method.

The agency also brought in a temporary legal limit of up to two ppm of benzene permitted in the products to help speed up production - amid fears over a national shortage.

The loophole was scrapped earlier this year, however, with the FDA saying there was now enough hand sanitizer available in the US.

The most recent recall came in September, and involved a product made in Florida — a sanitizing hand spray from Salon Technologies International.

The FDA asked the company to issue a voluntary recall after finding that the product contained benzene.

Hand sanitizers from China-based Ningbo Haishu Huayu Industry and Trade and South Korean manufacturer Mirfeel Korea Co are no longer allowed to be imported into the US, after the companies failed to issue a recall when benzene was found in their gels.

I was one of those that went out with face masks and disposable gloves. That was only when I had to go out. I never bought any hand sanitizer as I never saw it available. I have had 5 shots so far and will keep doing it as long as I have too! When I go out I always carry the masks and gloves. Better to look wierd as opposed to getting sick.

I am glad you are choosing self care for yourself. Thank you.

Thanks for the info, hollydolly. It seems all the well-known brands on sale in the UK are not included but I'm going to check all of mine anyway.

Not saying this is wrong, benzene is not good for you... however these hand sanitizers have very little benzene compared to gasoline and other products we handle. Such as glues, paints, furniture wax, and detergents.

The average gasoline contains about 1% benzene (10,000 ppm). As far as I can tell the highest benzene concentration in these hand sanitizers is 5,000 times less, 2 ppm, most have even less ( https://www.health.com/mind-body/hand-sanitizers-cancer-causing-benzene#:~:text=Valisure analyzed 260 bottles from, contained detectable levels of benzene. ).

One whiff of gasoline vapor whist filling your car, or from a small spill will expose you to a whole lot more benzene. Even breathing the air as you drive past a gas station...

I don't think benzene belongs in hand sanitizer, getting it out is a good thing. However I wish reports like this would put the risk in perspective...

but most of us don't rub glue , paint, furniture wax et al..into our hands several times a day

No, but at the concentrations found in some of those products you don't have to for the exposure to exceed what you get from the hand sanitizer.

Benzene is also found in second hand tobacco smoke.

Again I am against benzene in hand sanitizer. Just think people should be given a bit more info on the relative risk.

but surely that's why they've been recalled because they have benzene in them, and far more than there should be, making them carcinogenic potentially..

Yes, it is. And I agree with the recall.

However the term carcinogenic is not very meaningful without the quantitative risk. It could be anything from 1 in a billion or more chance to 1 in 10.

Lots of benzene out there.

They're still around in this area. I've never used them. Wasn't entirely sure what they contained, but figured it wasn't healthy or completely safe. I just use soap and water, as usual.
I always use soap and water did so all through the lockdown.. but I took the spray I made myself, with me in the car always to use on supermarket trolleys and also on my own hands afterwards.. anywhere, that I would be touching things other people touched.. as well as often wearing gloves.. and still I washed my hands the absolute second I got indoors.. In fact I've always washed my hand the minute I get home from anywhere , and still do..

I rarely used the hand sanitizers as they dry out your hands. I kept my hands away from my face and nose until I got home to use soap and water. I have two unopened containers of sanitizers on my shelf from 2 years ago. I am more concerned with air droplets than touching a contaminated shop cart.

Same here.. but I often found that was when strands of hair fell on my face, or I needed to sneeze..:ROFLMAO:

I think I'm going to start using them less and less though they are practically demanded at work. I did buy only ones made in USA but got some free outdated ones from work. Made in China.

Remy make your own, you can get a minimum of 91% Isopropyl alcohol , add it to 1/3rd Aloe Vera Gel... a small bottle of Isporopyl alcohol and Aloe vera is cheap.. and I bought some very small spray bottles 30 ml from Amazon.... they're about the size of the palm of my hand.. and I had them in my bag, in my car.. in my coat pocket.. don't risk those Chinese concoctions

I think you are right. Thank you. And thanks for that 'recipe' I do have a small Trader Joe's spray bottle in my purse. It's good to have.
