Food - if you had to, how long could you last

Probably have 20 pounds of rice, 15 pounds of sugar, a few boxes of powdered milk. Need to buy some more salt and water. Fair amount of canned food like soups. If food supplies were disrupted, another related issue would be electrical power if out for weeks. Very possible in earthquake country. People would not be able to cook much food. As an outdoor person with full camping and backpacking gear, I have a few white gas stoves and a few extra 64oz cans of white gas fuel. Ones vehicle 12v batteries given ports can also be the source for USB charging devices.

Food - if you had to, how long could you last?

Stocks of coffee, booze and sugar for barter may help keep me alive after the food stocks have dwindled. As far as food I have an abundance of game and edible plants in the woods on my property. Of course that would not last indefinitely but being old does have it's advantages. I could probably last several years if I was lucky.

Not long enough. But I'd guess at least a month. I have more than 7 weeks of canned beans so I've probably already been reported to the authorities for being a dangerous prepper sort or something.

We just did come grocery shopping today. Every time we go, everything is more expensive, it is completely out of control. $50 to put gas in my little SUV.

I have a fear of not having enough food in the house. There is sort of a story behind that. When I was young and just out on my own and for the first time I moved far away from my parents and grandparents and pretty much anyone I know. I went through some very rough times when I could not really afford to keep food in my house. I would literally have some rice and some crackers, maybe a can of soup and that was it. And I was working part time, I just could not pay the bills and keep enough food. This was only for about a month maybe, but it never left me. And there was no one to help and I would have eaten rats before I asked for help from a stranger. Since then I have had a serious phobia of running out of food. I didn't have to do this, but I was and still am a fiercely independent person and I had to prove it, and I did, but I got hungry a few times. I had to explain this to my wife because every time we are even a little low on stuff, I sort of freak out. As soon as I buy a house you'll probably see me on a prepper episode stocking my fallout shelter full of food.

If I could just get my hands on some Twinkies, Hohos, and Spam from the 60s, I think they have a half life somewhere close to Plutonium.

I went through shortages like Hyperion when I was first married and my husband was still in college. Our rent was paid but food came in spurts after one of our parents would send us some money. We would eat well for a few days and then live on things like the homemade jars of applesauce my mother had given us. I didn't let it worry me until I got pregnant and then I did worry. Somehow options like applying for food stamps never occurred to me, I just hadn't been raised that way.

There is a whole group of people in out country who are food insecure who lie somewhere in between those who are fairly well off and those who are savvy about working the welfare system for food stamps, aid to dependent children, food banks, etc. I'm afraid that group is on the rise.

I was actually assessing this last night. I would estimate that I have enough food for a month.

15 pounds of Sugar would last me 3 lifetimes..I don't think I've used that much in my whole life up to now...
