How successful is internet advertising?

There are small ads here on Senior Forums. I look right past them. (I only realized they were there when someone mentioned it in another post.)

We are constantly bombarded with advertising on the internet. I subconsciously ignore them when I can, or easily dismiss them when that is not possible. Tech companies pitch to advertisers that their advertising will reach the right users on various platform aps (Facebook for example). I’m not sure what demographic I fall into, but it is one that no matter how much advertising is presented to me, in whatever fashion, I will never be persuaded to buy any product. When I decide that I need something, which is very seldom, I will either get it at my local grocery store or pharmacy, or find it on Amazon. I usually give money to my kids and grandkids for birthdays and holidays, but if they do tell me there is an item that I can get for them, well I look first on Amazon.

So I’m sure that there are others of you like me. We belong to a demographic that cannot be persuaded to buy anything. The advertisers would go broke if they relied on us! Obviously, however, they are successful with the vast majority of the population.

I have always hated advertising that is "shoved down my throat." The iphone that I have is full of advertising. I don't read it and I don't want it. At my age, I am liberated of buying stuff that I don't want and stuff that I don't need. Ditto for flyers in the mailbox.

Something I don't understand: I read the news on CBC and BBC on my computer and there is no advertising. When I look at the CBC and BBC on my iphone it is full of advertising. Some call it a "Smartphone." I call it a "Dumbphone."

Well done you, I take your example and go one stage further by paying cash, that way I avoid the profiling that is so prevalent today. What I find so annoying, sinister almost, is the way profiles are bought and sold. I'm sure that I must be on one or two, I've had the odd advert on my phone, but I still do what I can not to give companies any of my spending habits.

I've gone the other way. I use plastic for everything. That accumulates lots of points to be used for the stuff that I do buy, and 10 sent increments off on a gallon of gas.

I never found in very great, I tried it in the past and
got more response from wishing somebody "Happy
Birthday", or "Merry Christmas", I actually recruited
several people with the above greetings.

The best results used to come from somebody who
is searching for a specific product or procedure, I
spent hours listing tags onto an advert, to promote
either the contents, individually, or the health benefits
on some wellness products.

Buying email addresses is throwing money away, the
cold calling, phone calls is another waste, you get to
speak to some nice people, but not all are nice and
you have to accept abuse if you get somebody who
is having a bad day, or is really upset that a stranger
in another country has their number.

Mike.

I never see ads. Since switching over to Malwarebytes, I use their browser guard, and it blocks all ads.
Thank you Paladin1950. Great advice. I will try to download Malwarebytes today. Can't stand the constant advertising; especially if it is the same add over and over and over and over and over. I don't care if they shove it down my throat a million times because I still am not going to buy it.

I hate the YouTube advertisements. I do let some of them run for a few channels I watch so they can get the money. I don't know how much it is but I have heard some of the big channels can bring in some money.

Must be pretty successful.

Seems to get a lot of folks like us to buy things, making the advertising folks and sellers lots of money. Both conscientiously and subliminally.

If it were not we wouldn't see the ads, and probably would not have places like this. Pretty sure SF's existence is dependent on revenue from those ads.

If a site or page asks me to disable AdBlock, I delete the page or site and move on. I do not get any ads and always close Youtube ads ASAP.
