I'm not sure about this , but several youtube videos claim that the 2023 COLA increase of 8.7% will start in December. If so, this has not happened before. It has always started in Jan.

SS pays benefits in advance; that's why, when a recipient dies, the last SS payment is automatically withdrawn from the relevant bank account.
